We used to step in shadows,
our faces half-hidden from the moon,
cast in a skeletal glow for the crowds
who watched our every move.

And they thought we were “happily ever after”?
Don’t make me laugh.

I nearly gave up on myself-
chained to your body by links of guilt,
disappointment,
reality.

(“This is as good as it gets,”
I told myself with a sigh.)

Then something changed in the storm.

Rain pounded through my veins
(in my blood)
and lightning electrocuted me,
courage screaming like thunder.

And I can’t say I regret a single moment,
or that decision,
but the way the water drizzled down the glass,
like tears, like anger, and in the end,
it doesn’t matter.

(What is said, what is done.
No use being broken.)
