ShelfLove Unboxing – “Fight the Power”

Posted December 14, 2017 by Amber in Bookish Things, Unboxings / 12 Comments

My first ever ShelfLove Box!  I’m quite excited for this one – I’ve struggled to find a US-based book box outside of OwlCrate for a while that focuses on the sorts of things I love.  Don’t get me wrong – FairyLoot and Illumicrate are both top of the line.  The books they choose, the artwork, the curation – it’s all fantastic.  I highly recommend them both!  But since I don’t live in the UK, there are conversion rates and shipping to think of, and I am trying to be more sensible about where I spend my money.

That said, I still order those two from time to time… they’re that good.

But this post is about ShelfLove.  And I am loving it.

The Box

When this box arrived, the first thing my husband said was “Did someone spill paint all over the side?  How did that happen?”.  To put that to rest right now – if you get this box, it’s not paint splattered.  It’s just the ShelfLove Design.

Since this is the first time I’ve gotten this box, I want to spend a moment talking about the box itself. There’s thought put into the design – it’s printed on multiple sides.  The inside of it is the ShelfLove teal and it’s written inside as well.  For a basic piece of packaging, it’s pretty nice.  The box is also packed really well – I never got the impression things were just tossed in.

The Loot List

Unlike many other boxes, the loot list artwork includes the preview for the next box.  In this case, the December box will be “Timeless”.  My subscription auto-renewed before I got this box, so guess what?  Y’all will get to see the Timeless Box too. 🙂

Eleven Pop! by Funko

Since I collect Pops, this one was thrilling.  I actually have QUITE a lot of Pops… and six other Stranger Things Pops.  I don’t have this one.  Honestly, I don’t think I even saw this one?  So that was swell.  Eleven is such a perfect pick to represent in the Fight the Power Box!  She’s completely badass and led the overthrow of horrible things happening in her little town.

Plus season two. OMG.

Something to note about Pops in subscription boxes – the boxes tend to get beat up.  This is something you have to come to terms with if you’re getting the Pops shipped to you from ANYWHERE.  I am not a box collector, so this doesn’t bother me.

Cyborg Candle by Icey Designs.

This lovely candle is inspired by Marissa Meyer’s Cinder.  It’s a little smaller than most book box candles but not the smallest I’ve seen.  Most importantly, it smells amazing.  Cherry Blossoms and White Tea are two aromas that simply belong together, my friends.

Mockingjay Pin

You really can’t have a box themed “Fight the Power” without some sort of tribute to Katniss Everdeen.  She’s the quintessential revolutionary, even if accidentally.  This Mockingjay pin is lightweight, and the shape of the Mockingjay itself is different than usual pins I’ve seen.  It’s different than the other one I have!  So it went on my purse with the other one.  Gotta represent! 🙂

ShelfLove Exclusive Unravel Me Pouch by Little Inklings Design

A girl can never have too many cloth pouches!  With a lovely wintery backdrop, this pouch features the quote “Books are easily destroyed but words will live as long as people can remember them.”  This reminds me of one of the themes behind Fahrenheit 451 as well!  It’s a pretty big pouch and super cute.

Dumbledore’s Army Patch

So obviously, this is the best ever honor to the “fight the power” sentiment.  But I am so thrilled because I used to have this most fantastic small canvas messenger bag with the D.A. symbol embroidered on it, but I sent it to hell and back and I cannot find another one.  NOW I can put this patch on my new canvas bag and !!! so excited.

Superhero ShelfLove Postcard

Oversized postcards are so much fun.  This has the ShelfLove insignia on the back, but on the front is this incredible artwork.  I really like the design here, and of course who better to fight the powers of evil than a superhero?

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Well!  I was not expecting this book in this box!  I mean, with the theme and everything, I guess I should have?  But this is a big book and all the rage right now, and I sort of got the impression that ShelfLove was a smaller box?  I expected something paperback, something good but not great.  Color me impressed.

ShelfLove exceeded my expectations.

Since this is the first time I’ve gotten this box, I just want to give a quick overview of this box.  I really liked it and I’d recommend it!  I appreciate that there’s different products in this box than I normally see – don’t get me wrong, I love candles but you get one in every box.  So I have a lot of bookish mini candles now?  But there’s not a lot of artwork in this box, and there’s not another bookmark.

I felt like there was love put into this box (there was a delay because the curator was unhappy with the quality of an item).  I think that’s really important.  I always love a Pop!  And I’ve never seen either of these two creators before, either, and I’m thrilled to see a change there as well.

I’d say give it a try if you’re looking to test a YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy box.  December’s theme is Timeless, and January’s theme is Cozy Reads!

  1. OMG, this looks FANTASTIC ?❤ I’m definitely going to give this one a try once I’ve saved up enough! (I wish conversion and shipping rates weren’t so insane sometimes… ???)

OMG I hear you. Personally, I love the UK boxes and wish I could get them consistently, but that is my exactly problem. I was going to try a box in the Philippines but it was going to cost over $100… :/ Just couldn’t swing it. I was relieved to find another one that was US-based… but the two countries really do have the monopoly.

      • SAME!!! I personally prefer the UK boxes too but pounds cost way more than USDs so I’ve to nope them too. Am definitely super glad that I’ve discovered this box through you ? And yes, I agree about the monopoly…though, I guess it’s because the big publishing houses/HQs are situated there.

(Also, sorry about my late reply! Silly me thought I clicked ‘post comment’ and I only realized that I never did waaaay later, urk.)

Lol, totally fine. I’m HORRIBLE about responding to comments on non-Wordpress blogs where I don’t get the notifications, so I totally understand.

The publishing houses bit makes sense, although now I’m wondering where the Canadian boxes are at?

  2. Wow! That’s a great unboxing! The Dumbledore’s Army patch is super cool. I’m not into the funko Pop thing, but if I were wanting one, Eleven would be super high up on my list–she’s basically the best. Hope you enjoy Renegades! That is a pretty happening book right now; I’ll be curious to see your thoughts on it!

I LOVE that patch! It’s something fun, and different. Plus the whole story about my woefully destroyed bag. XD. Eleven is fantastic.

Renegades is getting good reviews all over the place – people have really enjoyed it. I’m quite pleased to have scored that one!

  3. I really hope you like Renegades!! It was one of my favourite reads this year! Along with a million other books, but still…
I don’t subscribe to any book boxes, because I’m broke, and couldn’t afford one even if shipping wasn’t an issue, but also I don’t know if there’s any in Canada, and… shipping is crazy. So… no book boxes for me. ?

You know I think you’re right? I don’t think I’ve heard of a Canadian book box either. :/ I feel like that’s a HUGE opportunity for someone. Australia, too.
