Intro:
The Docks. Crowds bustling. Salt and stench and a dignified lilt of her chin amidst the grunge of it all.
Enne Salta.
Lets talk about Enne.
Character aesthetic by Amanda Foody via Twitter.
In the first lines of the novel, Enne already stands out in a crowd. This is, in part, because of the way she carries herself. Her blushing dignity and immense pride. Her love and determination. Enne stands out because she is smart, sly, and keeps to her values. At least, she is in the first chapter of Ace of Shades. Once thing I quickly noticed in the first chapter is that Enne is a trusting soul – she carries a guidebook that tells her to be wary or everyone and everything, and yet she immediately walks up to patrolmen who try to arrest her THEN ends up following a child who admits freely he’s a gangmember. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like this behavior will eventually get her in trouble.
In the Ace of Shades world, everyone has certain gifts passed down in their family line – a talent gene, per se. Enne’s are dance and math, although she easily admits that the Abacus family talent is not strong with her. She is a dancer though and we can see that into the kept way she ties back her hair. I think that we can expect to see mavellous things from this classy, resourceful lady… especially teamed up with Levi (who we’ll meet in a little more detail next week).
If you’d like to meet Enne fully, head on over to Amanda Foody’s website and read the first chapter.
