The Signed Prisoner of Azkaban I’ll Never Have

I don’t believe in collecting rare book editions.  That is to say – I don’t think it’s wise to collect books for the purpose of their value, unless you are well-to-do and have a gallery for display or something like that – books are meant to reread, after all!

However, from time to time, I allow myself to get entranced by the rare editions that pop up on Abe Books.

Do y’all remember way-back-when… before BookCons and subscription boxes and John Green… back when a signed edition had some value?  I used to treasure by signed books like nobody’s business.  I still do, actually, though the physically signed books get a bit more love than the ones with a signed bookplate.  When the Harry Potter series was first published, it was in the dark times before the signed bookplate.  A signed edition of Harry Potter is a rare and wondrous thing.

If I ever were to acquire a large sum of money that I could spend indulgently on just one book, I’d try and find a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

For whatever you think of J.K. Rowling, she is a brilliant writer.  I know a lot of people are very upset with her for not interfering more with WB and getting Johnny Depp removed from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.  In fact, I’ve seen people on Twitter say they are selling all their Potter franchise and wiping their hands clean of her.  While I have opinions about this whole situation… nothing is enough to get me to pretend I never read those stories.  Furthermore, even if you do not support her, second-hand editions (even rare ones) provide no income to the author.  And I’d desperately like a signed Prisoner of Azkaban.

POA is my favorite Potter book.  I’ve read it over and over again.  The characters are at their prime, and it’s the only one in the series that (more or less) stands alone.  It’s the only book I own that I could probably read indefinitely (maybe also Anne of Green Gables?  Still… they are few and far between).  If I were to drop a lot of money on one book, it would be that one.

This week’s Book Blogger Hop asked:

You have just won a $100.00 Visa gift card. Will you spend the entire amount on a rare collector’s edition you have always wanted, or buy several newly-published books? Explain your choice.

Short answer: Honestly, I’d probably buy new books, because I wouldn’t want to read a $100 book – it costs too much to be touched!  Ever!  Imagine how bad I’d be with a $40,000 book like the one I’ve described above….

Do you own any rare books?

What book would you spend loads of money to get?

Given $100, would you buy a rare book or 5-7 new books?
