Mid-Year Freak Out Tag! (2018)

Posted June 18, 2018 by Amber in Tags / 7 Comments

I really wanted to do this tag last year, and it just didn’t work out with my posting schedule.  This year, I bookmarked the tag from the lovely Lia @ Lost in a Story and I am ready to DO THIS THING.

The Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2018

Gosh this one is hard.  I’ve read a lot of really fantastic books so far this year and it’s so hard to pick JUST ONE.  I think I have to go with Tess of the Road, because it’s the one that spoke to me the most.  BUT SO MANY OF THIS YEAR’S READS HAVE BEEN SO GOOD.

Your Favorite Sequel of the Year

I’ve been reading a lot of first-in-the-series so far, or standalone.  The best sequel that I’ve read has definitely been Anne of the Island.  Oooold school.  No school like the old school!  But seriously y’all, Anne’s a classic.

A New Release That You Haven’t Read But Really Want To

I have a whole pile of these!  I actually have my very own separate TBJ Jar for the 2018 debuts I own and hav no read but my vote actually goes to Tempests and Slaughter which I’ve been DYING for since forever.  FOREVER, my loves!  It’s a victim of the TBR Jar, and I have no idea when I’ll pull it. 🙁

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

I know I’m not typically one that jumps up and down excited for contemporaries, especially since I’ve had really mixed success with them… but I’m super duper looking forward to Not the Girls You’re Looking For.  And, okay, this book comes out tomorrow, but that’s after today!  It counts.

Your Biggest Disappointment

Ugh, I expected sooo much more from Ignite the Stars.  I really wanted to like this book.  The cover is stunning.  It was a space opera!  Recipe for awesome.  But the characters were flat and the romance with hella cliche and it didn’t work for me at all.  My review isn’t going to drop until August, but I really hope others enjoy it more.

Biggest Surprise of the Year

Honestly?  Probably The Lies of Locke Lamora.  First of all, it wasn’t about what I expected AT ALL.  Then, once I started listening to it, it was a big pile of boring disappointment. THEN OUT OF NOWHERE it got REALLY REALLY GOOD.  I had a lot of emotions about that one, lemme tell you.

Favorite New-to-You or Debut Author

I was insanely blown away by Reign of the Fallen earlier this year, so I think I have to go with Sarah Glenn Marsh.  Besides, her Instagram is filled with really beautiful pictures of her greyhounds and even though I am not a dog person, I really love it.  Can’t wait to read more of her work.

Your New Fictional Crush

Y’all, I’m almost 30 and married and I read YA, this is not really a thing for me.  Or maybe I’m just weird.  Either way, don’t think I can point to a book character and swoon.

New Favorite Character

I really dug the minor characters in Ace of Shades… enough that I did a whole post about them.  Reymond, Jac, and Lola all get love for this one… to whatever ends.

A Book That Made You Cry

Weirdly, non-fiction.  Not so weird once you know what it is: The Radium Girls.  I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that truly ripped my heart into so many tiny pieces, and it is even worse because you know that the story is true.  I think I broke down a bit one night when I was extra tired and they were describing the girls who were wasting away while they waited for the legal system (which ultimately didn’t do these ones much justice at all).  Really, really sad.

A Book That Made You Happy

My first read of the year! Foolish Hearts is a light contemporary that made me smile and warm and fuzzy all over.  It was out of my comfort zone and I only ended up reading it because it came in my OwlCrate box.  No regrets here!

Your Favorite Book-To-Movie Adaptation You’ve Seen This Year

I recently posted about The Handmaid’s Tale – and I really have to go with that one!  It’s so powerful and well done, and I really like it.  If I hard started into season two of A Series of Unfortunate Events, it may have been that one instead, though. 🙂  Neil Patrick Harris is perfection.

Favorite Book Post You’ve Done This Year

Ahhh, my book tag!  I made my own book tag near the beginning of the year and it’s done far better than I expected!  It’s the 90s Kid Book Tag and I am so proud of it, loves. 🙂

The Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought/Received This Year

Shout out on this one goes to the hardcover, stained pages, review copy I got for free of The Price Guide to the Occult.  I’ve gotten quite a few ARCs for Candlewick Press, and when I won this, I was expecting another basic paperback ARC.  NOPE.  This is a stunning book and was a complete surprise which made it even better.

What Are Some Books You Need to Read By the End of the Year

Ahhh!  Well, I’ve cleared out my NetGalley ARCs (yay!) but I have a whole jar of 2018 debuts I really want to read for the 2018 Debut Author Challenge.  Like… 15 of them I think!  And on top of that, I have Leah on the Offbeat sitting on my side table waiting to be read for June’s Apparating Library Book Club.  I’ve gotta really buckle down on my hardcopy!

😀 Thanks! I think it’s gotten something like 30 reposts… at least ones that I’ve been tagged in? I’ve had so much fun reading them.

  1. Oh wow, I thought I commented on this ages ago, but it must not have gone through! ?

ANYWAY. Lol. Anne of the Island!! Oh my god, that’s my favorite of the Anne books! I love that series. That’s the farthest I’ve read though, so I really need to read the other books! I haven’t read Ace of Shades or Foolish Hearts yet, but I have them and am super excited about them. They sound awesome!

I *loved* Anne of the Island so much. I just needed something heartwarming in my life and I was so worried because I didn’t love Anne of Avonlea, but Anne of the Island was perfect, <3 <3 <3 That's as far as I've read, too. XD

Foolish Hearts is a good lazy weekend read. Light and fluffy and easy and delightful. Ace of Shades is fun but I really think King of Fools will be a lot better! I hope you love them both!!!
