Bonjour, mes chers.
American Thanksgiving is this Thursday and while it had some grisly, mortifying beginnings, it has become a day for family and gratitude and reflection. And, frankly, for food. Big focus on food. But it’s still a good time to look back and reflect on the previous year and find things that have brought us joy and to be grateful for them.
I didn’t do one of these last year, so I really wanted to remedy that this year.
I a grateful for… a consistent readership base.
We bloggers but a lot of work into our content for very little in return. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a few ARCs to read or be able to rep for a small business. For me, what makes it worthwhile is getting to talk with you all! I understand that interest will wax and wane, and that sometimes people will unfollow… and that’s okay. I’m a reader too, so I get that sometimes a blog just doesn’t do it for you anymore. But I feel so fortunate to be getting constant views, even on days without a post. And I love talking to you all.
I’m grateful for… my favorite bloggers.
Last year, I spent a lot of time hopping around, trying to find my place in the community and make a compendium of blogs that I really enjoyed. I love having my go-to blogs now, places I rely on for good recs and content. It’s been wonderful. I made a post about five of these blogs earlier this year, and have plans to spotlight more great bloggers next year.
I am grateful for… the ability to talk about things that aren’t books.
For the first time, I tried this year to talk about something other than what I’ve been reading or writing. While there hasn’t been a lot of engagement, there has been some, and that’s been wonderful! I feel very lucky that I’ve been able to share my travel adventures with y’all! From things like King Richard’s Faire to my Europe trip to most recently Disney World…. thank you. There will be a handful more of these posts in the next year as there are a couple short trips to the Caribbean planned, but there should be fewer of them. 🙂
I am grateful… that I’ve read more books this year than ever before.
In October, I exceeded my previous standing record for the number of books I’ve read in a year. I’ve never believed in myself enough to think that I could exceed 100 books in a year, let alone 120 and still going strong. I know for a lot of bloggers this is nothing, but I am so shocked and pleased.
I don’t expect to hit these numbers again next year – we’re planning on moving a little closer to work, so there will be fewer audiobooks. I also need to get my SEI and a securities registration next year whether I like it or not, so I will need to study in the spring. But for now? I’m grateful.
I am grateful for… #bookstagram support.
As you may have noticed, I’ve been plugging my instagram every single blog post. I was inspired by a few great accounts to pick up on #bookstagram posts and ultimately move over to my own account. While I will never be the type of person who gets 100 followers a week, I am so, so grateful for each person who has come over to check it out, and taken a chance on following me. I’ve got a lot of different people over there than I do here, so having multiple outlets has been fun.
I am grateful for… eGalleys from NetGalley.
Because of the 2018 Debut Challenge and the Great Bookcase Crusade, which give me plenty of reading content, I haven’t requested a lot from NetGalley this year. That said – I am always grateful for free books, and I have gotten some amazing ones this year, including Reign of the Fallen, Tess of the Road, and The Gilded Wolves.
I’m also grateful for… paperback ARCs.
I have long ago given up on Goodreads, but I win something from LibraryThing ever month I enter. While I don’t always love the books I request, I do get to read from smaller authors and different publishing houses through LibraryThing. I really appreciate how much more accessible ARCs are from them, even if they don’t have all the biggest names. My favorite ARC from them this year has been The Bigfoot Files.
I am grateful for… The Shadow Gang.
On this note, I am also incredibly grateful that I was able to be a part of Amanda Foody’s shadow gang (even though my gang lost every month) because it was an awesome opportunity and I won a raffle for an Ace of Shades ARC. I don’t think I’ve ever won a raffle in my life before, and it was so cool to be a part of the blog/bookstagram based marketing crew for Ace.
I am grateful for… Ashley/Bookhost.
It’s on my long list to write a full post about Bookhost, the little company that manages me hosting. Ashley, the owner and proprietor, is a book blogger over at Nose Graze. I just love working with her so much – she really makes me feel like I’m her only customer, and has helped me with so many little behind-the-scenes things.
I am grateful for… the opportunity to participate in other blogs.
This year, I was asked to participate in a round table, and had the opportunity to write guest posts for Blushing Bibliophile (no longer available – she reset her blog to go in a new direction), and That Artsy Reader Girl. I was also able to participate in a roundtable discussion at Poetry Books YA. The roundtable IN PARTICULAR was so much fun to do. So… y’know. If anyone is doing a roundtable, I’m game to sit at it. 😀
