Good morning, my lovelies!
For those of you who celebrate, you know it’s a mere 8 days until Christmas! I’m sure some of you are jumping up and down with excitement – your homes are filled with the fresh scent of pine from your Christmas tree and you are already dreaming of sugared plums (or so the poem goes). The other day, I stumbled across this fantastic tag on Poetry, Books, YA that was created over on Keep Reading Forward all about famous classic Christmas characters and I had to dig in.
This one isn’t a bookish tag, but I hope you guys enjoy it all the same! 🙂
A Gift You Received or Want This Year
I know this isn’t the best Santa GIF, but I love this movie. It still holds up, what? 25 years later? The sequels not so much, but the first one is solid. If you haven’t seen The Santa Clause, then please, do!
So I’m at that age where we do a lot more giving of presents and a lot less getting of presents. Which is fine, because I’m an adult without any dependents, and I buy what I want. The one thing I always have asked for when people are buying me gifts… is books! And I stopped getting those when I was in high school. I don’t know why.
A Favorite Holiday Treat to Have Every Year
I almost went with a variety of Christmas cookies on this one, but I’ve got to back track and say: GINGERBREAD. I love homemade gingerbread, and it’s so easy to make, and I always forget to make it around Christmastime and then wait until the following year. Give me a square of spicy gingerbread cake with a thin layer of cream cheese frosting and I am the happiest girl in the world.
Ghost of Christmas Past
A Holiday Memory from Your Past
All my Christmases blend together, honestly. My family never traveled for Christmas, and we never made an annual trip to go see Santa or anything like that. In fact, my brother and I weren’t raised with the belief of Santa Claus. It was a fun myth, like in movies, but not real. I don’t think either of us cared either way, frankly.
I do remember getting up at around 3:00am with my brother and wanting to open presents. Neither of my parents subscribed to the GET UP REALLY EARLY WITH THE KIDS AND YAY aspect of Christmas, so they’d lock their bedroom door and amble out around 11:00am. We were not allowed to open any presents, so we just waited, taunted by the pile under the tree. Eventually it became an unspoken understanding that we could open our stockings in the interim, and that helped.
Okay I’m also becoming slightly concerned that my GIF choices aren’t going to click, because they’re not the wholesome, usual choices for these characters. 😛 This is the Ghost of Christmas Past from Scrooged and the last one is Aidy Bryant on SNL in one of their “Naughty Elves” sketches.
Buddy the Elf
“The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.”
A Holiday Song You like to Sing Each Holiday Season
I genuinely love this movie? I’m not Will Ferrell’s biggest fan, but when he does it right, he does it right. Elf has soooo many great quotable moments! <3
Okay, so, Christmas songs. I’m pretty much game for any of them. I have a version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” that I really enjoy, and I like listening to the Rat Pack’s Christmas album. I’ll listen to just about any Christmas music EXCEPT.
I hate “Last Christmas”. I don’t care if it’s Taylor Swift or Wham! singing it, I do not like this song. It gets stuck in my head, the lyrics are angsty, and nope. You can enjoy it to the end of the world and beyond, but I am OUT. *mic drop*
An Unpopular Toy You Really Wanted to Get One Year
I feel like “books” is still a solid qualifier for this one. My family didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so the Hot Toy Of The Year was not an option. I tried really hard to get a Tamagotchi or a Game Boy Advance (with Pokemon, obvs), or a Furby, and the answer was always no. I was lush in stuffed animals and books and clothing.
A Moment When Your Heart Grew Three Sizes
I used to be really good at picking the right gift for people. Whenever I nail a Secret Santa gift or something for my family for Christmas, it’s such a gratifying feeling. They liked it – I did good. 🙂
A Tradition You Like to Do Every Winter
Like to do, or successfully manage to to do? Because every year I say to myself “I’m going to go ice skating this winter”! And while I genuinely intend to do it, it never happens. The house where I grew up had an pond in the back, and we used to ice skate all winter. I LOVE it. I’m not fancy, but it’s a nice Now, I haven’t been since my freshman year of college, which was ten years ago. Ughhhh I’m dying to go ice skating. This year I will!
A Moment You Believed in a Holiday Wish/Miracle
Oh no. Well, this may make me a bit off a Grinch, but… not really? My family raised me religiously, so Santa Claus wasn’t really a thing. As bitter as it is, life hasn’t really led me to believe in miracles. I’m happy for the people who get to be the one percent of an impossible situation, but that just isn’t me. #downer
Cindy Lou Who
A Favorite Holiday Tradition
Oof. I guess my favorite Christmas tradition is going to Matt’s aunts house on Christmas Eve. My family doesn’t have traditions, and most of his… the things we do change every year. My husband and I are so busy running around to all the different Christmases with our two families that we haven’t had a Christmas for just the two of us – or even put up our tree – in three years now. 🙁
Frosty the Snowman
A Memory Involving Snow or A Memory You Would Like to Have Involving Snow
I remember the snowstorms, mostly. Walls of white on either side of the highway driving to work a couple years ago. Layers of ice so thick atop the snow that, as children, we were light enough to walk on it and slide around (delightful). When we were kids, every winter, my brother and I would through snowballs at the big living room window. Since we had an above-ground basement, this was essentially the second story and we were quite pleased with our athletic prowess.

A Holiday Activity You Like Doing
I love holiday baking! I’m not home as much as I want to be, so I don’t do it like I did a handful of years ago, but I love pulling out ALLLLLL the cookie recipes and just going CRAZY. My signatures are Oreo truffles and cyclops cookies… only instead of peanut butter cookies with milk chocolate kisses, I make chocolate cookies with peppermint kisses. YUM.
A Favorite Holiday Saying or Quote
Okay, so we have all these lovely classic Christmas movies and all sorts of religious text around Christmas, but when you ask me what my favorite Christmas quote is, the first thing I think of is: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
I love Elf. 😛
