Mes chers, I was recently introduced to a new candle crate SOON TO BE BOOK BOX and I love it so much, I’m not even going to wait until next month to share it like I usually do.  So.  Spoilers, spoilers, spoilers!

NovelKnight did an unboxing of April’s MLC Co. Candle Crate on her Instagram, and I was super impressed with the products there, considering it was the company’s first box. When the list of fandoms was announced for Box #2, I was there.  Classics, guys.  Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Twilight… these are fantasy kings and queens!  Regardless of whether or not you liked them… you can’t argue with the success of these franchises.  Between Austine’s unboxing and the fandoms, I knew I wanted to give MLC Co.’s Candle Crate a go.

So y’all know, I am not an MLC Co. rep (though wouldn’t that be awesome) and this post isn’t sponsored.  Here to share some bookish, candle love with y’all and I hope you’re as excited as I was!

A moment about the box?  This was left sitting on our stoop – as happens when the recipients of the package are not home.  My husband was driving and we pulled in for him to exclaim, “One of our packages looks like wood!”  He was very excited about this, and I’ve got to admit… I do like how this actually looks like a crate.  Little touches make a big difference. 🙂

The spoiler card is right here on top, beautiful artwork but simple.  I try really hard to avoid looking at the back of the spoiler card because I like the surprise of the book boxes!  So I just take a moment to appreciate whatever artwork there is and steel myself for the rest of the items.

My first item out of the box was this wood postcard inspired by The Fellowship of the Ring.  To be honest?  This was the only item in the box that was a bit of a bummer to me, so I’m glad we’re getting it out of the way first.  I was hoping that the Lord of the Rings item would be a little more… memorable, I guess?  I’m in the middle of the series right now, and I am all about the mercy.  I’m also not a postcard person, generally speaking, and I don’t really know what to do with this one?  It definitely feel like a photograph from the set with text overlaid, and that’s something I could make on Photoshop myself.  This item gets a pass from me.

Item two was lotion inspired from An Ember in the Ashes.  I still haven’t read this yet and – guys, I know, I know! – I even have a physical copy on my shelf.  I actually have a lot of lotions, but this is going to come in handy because the apartment where we recently moved has really hard water, and lotions are a must.  This one is supposed to smell like mountain air, ozone, and citrus.  This could not be more perfect for me… I LOVE the smell of citrus.  It is my #1 lotion scent, so win!  My only criticism here is I wish the label was on a gloss finish?  The matte makes it feel like regular paper and sort of make the item feel cheap.  But that’s all packaging and doesn’t really impact the item itself.

I am so torn about this next item.  It’s a lemon cherry lip scrub inspired by Cassandra Claire’s The Red Scrolls of Magic.  On the one hand, I haven’t red these (and probably never will) but the reference doesn’t really impact the item, so I’m okay with that.  However, the killer here for me is the cherry.  This really really smells like cherry and I decidedly do not like cherry.  Childhood flashback memories of cough syrup and no thank you.  But I’ve recently become obsessed with lip scrubs thanks to an Illumicrate box a couple months ago, so I’m probably going to end up using it anyway and just make a face every time I smell/taste cherry.

Arrrrgh, another complicated item.  This month included an enamel pin (which I think I knew) and an item from Twilight (which I did know) and I was really hoping they wouldn’t be the same item.  Alas, alack.  Twilight is just not my fandom, but I really appreciate this item for a few reasons… first of all, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Twilight pin?  Granted, I haven’t been looking for them, but considering how big this fanbase is, I’m a little surprised I don’t see more merchandise.  Second, this is a really nicely done pin.  It’s high-quality, it’s well laid out, it has glitter (because obviously).  I love everything about it… except that it’s Twilight.  After much moaning, I’ve decided to pass this on to my brother’s girlfriend, who IS a fan and will appreciate it far more than me.

Since MLC Co. is short for Muggle Library Candle Company, eventually there was gonna be some candles in this box. MLC Co. includes two categories of candles:  A woodwick candle, and a sorting-style candle.  Which I didn’t realize until I read the spoiler card later, haha.  The woodwork candle is inspired by Shatter Me, which wasn’t my cup of tea.  I read the first book I thought the language was beautiful, but the story was decidedly not for me… but.  This candle says it smells like birthday cake, strawberries, and frosting.  And it does.  It smells amazing.  It’s also a really pretty pale green.

The sorting candle this month is inspired by Aurora Rising and on the back of the spoiler card, there’s a key as to which one each color means.  I haven’t burned this one yet, but I’m going to have to burn it soon because there is a warning that if you wait too long, the color will reveal itself.  Now, I haven’t read Aurora Rising yet but only because I’m waiting on my May Illumicrate… so that’ll be a while coming yet.  Still, this candle smells incredible.  When they say Fruit Loops, they mean Fruit Loops!  It’s actually really funny because I just got the Can’t Adult Today candle from Evil Queen that has this exact aroma.  Don’t care, I’m totally loving it.

While the candles were totally incredible and definitely a focus point of the box, I feel like the next item was really the BIG item.  MLC Co. spoiled a Monster Book of Monsters item from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and holy crap yes I am totally there.  This is a handmade item and I had NO IDEA what to expect.  It turned out to be a really fluffy post-it note holder?

Now on one hand, I’m thinking, I go through Post-It notes like candy at work… I should definitely bring this in.  And on the other hand, I have to acknowledge that I’m an adult working in finance and this probably isn’t the most professional item to have sitting on my desk?  Regardless, I think it’s super fun and I really like how they are different genders with different colored Post-It notes?  Stuff like that just makes these more fun.  I got a boy book, but Austine @ NovelKnight got a girl book. 🙂

Overall… I’m just… WOW WOW WOW.  There are so many factors that go into why I am so impressed with this box.  Guys, I don’t typically post reviews of boxes on here that I consider an overall bust.  It just feels rude.  Instead, I share the ones I LOVE.  I have never shared a candle box review before, because for the most part, they’re just whatever.  I actually got a good one from Novelly Yours before I revived book boxings, but otherwise… I haven’t really run into one I wanted to recommend that was a full box (and not just a monthly candle).

MLC Co. has taken a candle box, and basically created a self-care fandom box with a couple of extra goodies.  I love that there are bath items in here (I really like getting those, even if it takes me an age to use them), and the candles are just incredible.  I’ve never ordered anything from MLC Co. before this, so I had no idea how high quality their candles were.  These two candles are basically worth the price of the box.  And the other items are fun and useful.  I could take or leave them, to be honest.

And, I’m just gonna put this out there, this is only MLC Co.’s SECOND candle crate.  I’ve seen curated boxes that were two years old and just didn’t have this quality.  I would HANDS DOWN keep buying this box.  In fact, I went hunting for a six-month subscription (they don’t have one).

But there’s more.  Guys, there’s MORE.  I’m already squealing about this box, and I have more exciting things.

Starting in July, this is going from Candle Crate to BOOK BOX.  MLC Co. just announced that they’re going to be having a book option starting in July, which will include sequels as well!  They will announce the book every month (love that – I don’t like getting doubles) and you could choose a crate with or without the book.  They’ll still have the candles, and 1-3 additional items.  You can read the full release here.

So, let’s TL;DR this.

Would I recommend this box?  Absolutely!  If you’re a candle person, and especially if you like bath products as well (*raises hand*) this is a very good box.  With one month down, I can already say I have a lot of faith in the quality of their products and am looking forward to ordering the June box.

This one is sort of the complete opposite of NerdyPost (which I also recommend) because there’s almost no paper products and everything is useful.  I love my paper products, but honestly?  I like having useful items more.  If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick MLC Co., and I really like NerdyPost.

So.  If you like candles, give this one a try.  Or, hold off until July and see what books will be joining in.

Have your ordered from MLC Co.?  I’m seriously resisting ordering a bunch of candle now I’ve had a taste because WOW. Check out their site and tell me which candles you’d order!

  1. I love the post it holder <3 It is adorable!! I would totally use it at work haha, but I don't work directly with customers so I am allowed to completely deck out my desk (I have a groot pencil holder!)

To be honest, I’m still really on the fence about bringing it to work. XD We can deck out our desks and I actually have 3 Harry Potter Pops and a Pickett plush on my desk… but I’m not sure the Monster Book of Monsters would be as welcome. XD Nonetheless, he’s decorating my at-home workspace nicely! 😛
