You know, I have a lot of saved tags in my drafts, and they’re all super fun, so I feel like it’s time to do more than one tag a month. 🙂
For my readers in the United States, I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July last week! We didn’t do anything much (we usually don’t) but it’s always lovely to have a day off! The only thing I miss about the Fourth of July celebrations in my childhood is the fireworks, but alas, personal fireworks are illegal in the state of Massachusetts, so…. ¯\
Today’s tag comes from Kyera’s Library, and it’s the Book Princess Sidekick Tag! …. Okay, really, this should be named the Disney Sidekick tag, because this isn’t about princesses, or even book princesses! But it was created by Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews sooo I get where the name came from, and this is super fun. I’m down for anything Disney!

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh
I love a good opportunity to talk about what I think is one of the funniest, most relatable, heart-brakiest books I’ve ever read.
One of my favorite books of all time is a bright yellow paperback called Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened. Once upon a time, I feel like the whole internet knew about Allie Brosh, but Allie’s faded out of the spotlight since Hyperbole and a Half was published – largely for mental health reasons. This book is so funny and Ally’s simple illustrations are the best. I’m very much a cat person, but the Simple Dog may be my favorite thing ever.
If you want a sampling of her work, her blog Hyperbole and a Half is still online, and about half the illustrated stories in this book are still available. There was a sequel book in the works for a while, but the publication date dropped to 2050, and now I think it will most likely never happen. Still, Hyperbole and a Half is legendary.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
There are a lot of really solid bookish groups out there – from the gang in The Raven Boys to the group of misfits in Six of Crows – but I gotta keep with the classics here. I really love the extended group beyond just the trio in Harry Potter, and particularly, I love that Luna and Neville kept the Army running strong at Hogwarts even after Harry, Ron, and Hermione dropped out to go Horcrux hunting. It’s amazing to see youths stand up against things they know are wrong and fight for their truths. And yes, DA wasn’t always perfect, and we see very little of it after the Umbridge era… but they’re just super cool in face of everything going on in the Wizarding World at the time.

All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater
When I started All the Crooked Saints, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I loved The Raven Boys but didn’t care for The Dream Thieves (I know, blasphemy) so I wasn’t certain which side this book would end up on. At the beginning, I was immediately bored. I even thought about DNF-ing it, if I’m being honest? But the more I read, the more I fell into the story. The world in All the Crooked Saints is so unique and beautifully written, and the magical realism really captured me. It went from a book I almost quit to one of my favorite books that month. I can see where it’s not for everybody, but I really, really enjoyed it.

Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan
I think I’m the only person who didn’t expect this One Character’s transformations, but I guess I was just sooooo immersed in the story as a whole and I was focusing so much on another character or two that when it happened, I was like: “wait what?” And I had to scroll back a few pages in my ebook and reread the section.
But it happened.
And it was intense and big and terrifying and hey so when is book two coming out now? Because I have questions.

Name Your Favorite Best Friend in a Novel
. . .
The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer
Listen, there’s a lot of really good best friends in books, so I wouldn’t say “favorite” is my particular favorite… because the “best friend” character trope is one of my favorites. So instead, I’m going with a grossly under appreciated best friend: Domovoi Butler.
Butler is young Artemis’ bodyguard, but he’s also a fine cook and teacher, and a confidant for Artemis. They’re a bit of a mismatched pair, but as the series goes on, it’s becomes odd to see Artemis without Butler. The young genius relies on Butler completely, and has gone to many extremes to save his friend’s life.

This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales
This book made me appreciate music.
I’m not saying I didn’t appreciate is before, but… okay. Elise is at her end and everything in her world is crumbling and pain. When she stumbles across the night club and hears the music it revives her. Most of the book is about Elise’s reawakening and rebuilding, if you will, and it’s interlaced with familiar artists and you can nearly feel the rhythm of the music as you read, and it’s awesome.
Also, I found a lot of bands I’d never listened to before while I was reading this one. Legitimately, I kept pausing the audiobook and looking up songs. Music is the soul of This Song Will Save Your Life… and with a title like that, it should be.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Poor Locke Lamora has the worst luck.
When I first read this book, I just kept thinking “well, that was rough, but now Locke’s on top of things and will have a bit of luck!”
No. That was never true. Locke has absolutely zero good luck. Everything he manages to accomplish, he accomplishes for sheer hard work and cleverness. And he has to push against every possible obstacle. He also has a habit of continuing forward while bleeding to death. He’s so utterly unfortunate, it’s comical at times.

Favorite Family Dynamics in a Novel
. . .
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Blue, her mother, and her aunts are probably my favorite family ever. They have an edge of Charmed (classic-style) and a little Practical Magic and all the right witchy/psychic feels. They’re all also very different characters, so you have sweet Persephone and brusque Calla and with Maura settled in between. They’re the type of family that can make a girl wish that she, too, was raised by a single mother and two eccentric aunts.
Beyond their personalities, though, they’re just so supportive. Blue’s family is always involved with Cabeswater and I love it.

Book That Most Impacted Your Life

Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
This book didn’t impact my life in that it is a deeply moving novel with important social themes or anything like that. It is simply the first book that captured my imagination so completely. Tamora Pierce pushed me down the road to becoming a bibliophile and loving the written word. The way she built her worlds and her female characters who could do anything they wanted empowered me as a young girl.
So, yeah. I know a lot of people would answer something more meaningful – like The Hate U Give – or something a little more popular – like The Mortal Instruments – but for me, it is unapologetically Alanna: The First Adventure.

Name a Character That Steals the Show

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
In reading this book, I never much loved Wade, the main character in Ready Player One. Wade’s best friend, Aech, was definitely my favorite character in this book. Aech has so much life and passion, but beyond that, Wade simply would not have managed everything he did if not for his best friend.
Frankly, I would have liked to have read a book from Aech’s point of view. Wade is too selfish, but then again, the most relatable protagonists have a fatal flaw. Nonetheless, Aech was great and if any minor character could have lead a story, Aech could.

Juliet & Warner (& Adam, honestly)
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Juliet is one of those characters that is too sweet and too innocent despite her power. I’m not sure if that changes throughout the series, but in this book at least, it was a bit nauseating. On the other hand, there is nothing recommending Warner as a love interest, so I don’t really understand how there were ever butterflies and floating heart bubbles for this potential couple. I have so many problem with it.
I know a lot of people love this series and honestly, more power to you! I’m glad so many people enjoy it, but the love triangle – particularly the Juliet/Warner angle – was just so solidly not for me
That’s all the questions! I hope everyone enjoyed this tag – I had a lot of fun putting it together and I tried to pull out some books I don’t see quite as often around the blogosphere these days.
