Good morning my beautiful monsters!
I have another new-to-me crate you’ve never seen on this blog before! *gasp* This isn’t a new box, Flick the Wick has been doing a monthly box for a little while now, but this is the first time I’ve tried it. They’re a candle company first, and their candles are often included in the big book boxes. For example, the Lunar Queen candle in December 2018’s OwlCrate was awesome – I’ve been following them ever since.
Their June box hooked me with a promise of Harry Potter, so I decided to climb aboard. I’ve generally had great luck with candle subscription boxes, and I already knew I liked their candles (always a win) so here we go!
(Disclaimer: not a rep, just a fan, sharing because I want to not because I get stuff. Huzzah!)
First of all, can I just squeal over the box for a second? This was one of the prettiest subscription box boxes I’ve ever seen. The design rolls out over the entire box, and the side I photographed is not the prettiest. Unfortunately, the prettiest side had my shipping label on it, but suffice to say, it was very pretty! +10pts. for box design!
As a candle box, there were four different candles in this box. I love Flick the Wick’s candle labels? Very clean but with a lot of rich colors. The Ministry of Magic 2oz. candle is a green candles, but I was a little confused at first because I didn’t think the candle smelled anything like berries (which was the only definable aroma on the label). Looks like one of the layers didn’t get updated when she designed the label – but this smells a bit more spiced and earthy, like cologne but lighter. It’s a nice smell… but no berries. Also… it’s not listed on the Swag List…? So it may just be a bonus due to the misprint, in which case – yay!
Item #2 – an AMAZING FLUFFY BLANKET. All the capitals are deserved on that. It’s summer here and I don’t care – I’m always happy to get a fleece blanket! I have two now from subscription boxes, plus… eh… at least four other just lying around, but one can never have enough cozy blankets, so I was pretty excited. Favorite item of the box, right here! The design on this is by Stella Bookish Art and the full tex reads “Don’t let the Muggles get you down” from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It’s all bright colors and excellence.
The 2oz. Voldemort’s Horcruxes candle was the one that smelled of dark magic, berries, and black florals. 🙂 Again, loving the aesthetic on the label with the dark mark and the dementor. Also, I like that it’s a black candle? I somehow don’t have many of these.
I’m usually not a big fan of keychains in these boxes. This acrylic Dumbledore keychain is no exception to that. There was a little note with it to take off the film, and I tried. Really, I did, but I couldn’t get it to peel? I’ll be honest, though… I didn’t trouble myself too much about it, because I wasn’t crazy about the item anyway. Not my style!
For those who don’t already know, Flick the Wick and Dreamy & Co. are the same person. I’ve actually gotten Dreamy & Co. boxes before and really liked the style, and didn’t realize they were the same person. I was pleasantly surprised to start pulling Dreamy & Co. items out… including this Golden Snitch pin that says “I open at the close.” On one hand, I really like the design, but the text is small and a little difficult to read. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you can figure it out. It’s a cute, delicate pin.
I don’t typically use magnetic bookmarks, but I really like the art on this Moaning Myrtle magnetic bookmark. It’s good as far as magnetic bookmarks go, so there’s not a lot to say.
Included was not just a magnetic bookmark, but a sturdy, large bookmark as well. One one side, we’ve got Hagrid with Baby Norbert on his shoulder, illustrated by @yyyatsan. It’s a cute illustration, but pretty darks some of the details were lost in printing.
Even though she does great typography and has done it on other items for this box, Flick the Wick didn’t illustrate the typography half of this bookmark. It reads “It matters not what someone is born but what they grow to be.” and has been lettered by Catarina Book Designs.
There are two art prints included in this box – the first is this stunning Luna Lovegood illustration by Ludmila-Cera-Foce. I love this illustration and I really want to find a place on my art wall for it. I love the softness of the illustration and I adore Luna.
On the backside of the Luna print is a typography print reading “For in dreams we enter a world that is entirely our own.” This is a really lovely quote from the series, and I feel like I haven’t seen it many places? It seems like the perfect print to hand in a bedroom, especially in a softer font in a children’s bedroom. Either way, both sides of this print were a win for me.
There was a second double-sided print included in this box as well, also illustrated by Ludmila-Cera-Foce. The illustration of Snape is also beautifully rendered, although I don’t think she captured Alan Rickman quite as well as she captured Evanna Lynch? I’m not a huge Snape fan (like, at all?) so I didn’t like this one as much as Luna, but I can’t deny, the artwork is gorgeous.
On the backside of the Snape print is another quote print, reading “To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.” This quote has always baffled me a little. What does organization have to do with it? I dunno, lol. But the typography is nice and I like the starry sky palette and the night sky over Hogwarts.
It’s pretty rare to find jewelry in this kind of subscription box… but there’s a full Harry Potter style ring. It’s gold, with the Deathly Hallows and Harry’s scar/glasses. This isn’t really my style – it’s not something I would wear and anyway, it would only fit on my ring finger. Which is great, except I always wear rings on my ring fingers regularly, and I don’t really need more. 🙂 I appreciate the variety!
There’s a mug included that’s big enough to be considered a campfire mug. It is perfect for hot cocoa, and also eating ice cream out of because yeah that’s sort of how I use my mugs in the summer. No shame! Ice cream is the best. Also, this is an adorable Hogwarts library illustration by TJ Lubrano here and I am SO pumped. Love this.
More candles at the bottom of the box! Love the bold colors on this 2oz. Weasley Wizard Wheezes candle! It has a really nice, candy smell. Sweet like vanilla. And I’m a fan anyway, because hey! This is a Fred and George Weasley item and I love them most.
This box’s special 8oz. candle is this beautiful, sweet and citrusy Quidditch World Cup candle. While I love the way this candle smells (the pineapple is strong with this one), I’m not sure this is what the World Cup would smell like? I’m thinking more grass and smoke and caramel (for some reason) but regardless of whether I think the aromas suit, this is a lovely smelling candle.
Overall, I thought this was a GREAT box. I feel like every typical book box swag item was included here. Every. Single. One. It’s a good box, but I don’t think it would be a monthly one for me. Which is great, because the boxes are single-purchase anyway. I’m really happy with the blanket, in love with the Luna illustration, and the candles are all great, as I expected. I, personally, would order again.
Oh, also? I love that a couple of my favorite bookish artists were included here. I love Stella Bookish Art and TJ Lubrano and have their work hanging up around my apartment, so I’m really excited to see them featured1
If anyone is interest (and a Tolkien fan!), the August box is on sale and it’s Middle Earth themed! I gotta be honest, I’m super temped by this one! Let me know if you get it! Either way, Flick the Wick is a Candle vendor I’m comfortable recommending.
Which item here was your favorite? As I mentioned, the blanket was A+ for me. As far as the candles go, I think the Weasley Wizard Wheezes one was my favorite. Tell me yours in the comments!
