Icy Strait Point (Alaska Cruise 2021)

Icy Strait Point (Alaska Cruise 2021)

We arrived in Icy Strait Point amidst dense fog and slow, patient rain. On vacation, you always hope for sunshine, but this melancholy and drizzle felt utterly perfect for Alaska somehow and we didn’t mind. Alaska breathes. It is a slow, patient behemoth of a land that waits with utmost patience and simply… is. I’m not sure how to describe it outside of abstractions. The land is largely untouched and even for someone like myself who hails from a deeply rural landscape, it is awe inspiring. We arrived at Icy Strait Point in the afternoon. The rain persisted and so […]

Meet the Norwegian Encore (Alaska Cruise 2021)

As I mentioned in my September Wrap Up, we went to Alaska at the end of the month! It was an incredible experience and makes the list of my top vacation spots because of its atmosphere, wonder, and beauty. We’ll get to that more in later posts, but as always with cruises, we start with the introduction of the ship! To get to Alaska, we travelled round trip from Seattle, WA on the Norwegian Encore. NCL’s policies continue to be stringent and we were required to show proof of vaccination, get tested before traveling and upon arriving at the port, […]

Kalimera my friends! Today is our final day of exploration on a handful of the Greek islands.  As with many of the other posts, we’re going to be looking into Greek history and bypassing much of the city sites.  While I would like to visit Oia someday, my priorities on this trip lay with the ancient peoples and as such, today we’re visiting the ancient ruins at Akrotiri.  But first?  A little about the island of Santorini. Santorini is nestled around a caldera, most notable for a major eruption during the Minoan Era.  This eruption – one of the largest […]

Exploring Corfu (Greek Islands Cruise 2021)

Corfu.  This is the island where we did not seek out ruins of temples and instead followed a different path – an overview of the island led by a local tour guide.  In Corfu, we got to drive up a narrow zigzagging mountain street, have homemade baklava, and eat vegetables and tzatziki sauce while overlooking Palaiokastritsa’s heart-shaped bay.  It’s a beautiful island, the greenest one we saw, and I absolutely loved it. Like Olympia, Corfu has left me longing to return (albeit, not in the heat of summer).  This island had the nicest people, the most beautiful views, and the […]

Olympia & the Temple of Zeus (Greek Islands Cruise 2021)

Olympia & the Temple of Zeus (Greek Islands Cruise 2021)

Even though I am not a sports person, even I was enchanted by the grandeur of Olympia. There are some ruins that just look like, well, broken stuff… and there are some that strike amazement into my very soul and the ruins and stories at Olympia did just that for me.  It was a little bit of the grandeur of some of the things, and certainly the state of the archaeological finds helped. I’ve been looking forward to writing this particular post because I was so awestruck at the site, but I daresay I won’t do it justice. If I […]
