Keeping It Local: A Day in Salem, MA

Hi everyone! Welcome to my first post of October!  In keeping with my tradition here on the Literary Phoenix, I’ve got a month of spooky-adjacent posts for y’all.  The reviews will be… just… reviews… but the posts should all be Halloweenesque! Starting out the month, I wanted to bring the only vaguely travel post I’m going to be able to share this year.  A couple months ago, my husband and I took a socially distanced trip over to Salem, MA.  We live fairly close to Salem and have talked about visiting the city for a couple years, but we’re always off […]

Cancelled Travel Plans & Dealing With Wanderlust While Stuck At Home

Hi everyone! Before I dig too deep into this post, I want to take a moment to acknowledge my privilege in even talking about this.  We are still deep in the midst of a pandemic and there are many pivotal things happening right now.  From social justice to politics to COVID-19, there are a lot of more important things going on in the world.  Believe me, I know. This post exists because, well… I really miss travel. It’s funny – four years ago, this would have been normal.  Vacations were a thing we didn’t have the time or funds for.  In […]

Our Thanksgiving Day at Coco Cay (Bahamas Cruise 4/4)

Our Thanksgiving Day at Coco Cay (Bahamas Cruise 4/4)

Royal Caribbean advertises their private island in the Bahamas with the very catchy phrase “Perfect Day at Coco Cay”.  It’s almost perfect… except “cay” is pronounced “key” and not “kay”.  So close!  Regardless, Coco Cay is Royal Caribbean’s answer to things like Disney’s Castaway Cay, and if you’re a beach person, a cruise line’s private island is a really cool opportunity to lay back on the beach and just enjoy the day. My husband and I are not beach people, but HEY!  It was Thanksgiving, and a private island was a way better offer than a dramatic family dinner.  Even if […]

Bahamas Cruise 2019 // Aquaventure & Atlantis Hotel!

Matt and I are working our way through the Caribbean this year, and this fall’s trip was entirely focused on the Bahamas.  I am grateful we were able to visit in November – I know whenever there’s a natural disaster, a lot of tourists back out or the touring companies change their itineraries, which is really sad because that’s the time when the countries need the industry the most. And yes, I hear how privileged that sounds.  I know that tourists, and cruise ships in particular, do a lot of damage to their ports.  Despite my choice method of transportation, […]

The Kennedy Space Center (Bahamas Cruise 2/4)

The Kennedy Space Center. So much history in this place. This was an interesting trip for my husband and I – Matt loves the science of… anything… and I like the stories behind it that are imprinted into our history as humans.  The Kennedy Space Center provided both, and it was a cool place to go once in your life… if you find yourself in the area. Our tour started with the famous countdown clock from the press pit.  Now retired, this clock stands at the entrance of the Kennedy Space Center with a plaque proclaiming that it is the […]
