How I Discovered Dante’s Inferno

How I Discovered Dante’s Inferno

In 2005, I joined a Harry Potter online role-playing community. I’ll give you a moment here to throw out endearing terms: I loved this community – it did SO MUCH for as far as developing my ability to write three-dimensional characters.  Harleyquinne Cathors, one of my favorite characters of all time, started on these forums and was later integrated as a completely different character in my WIP, although with the same spirited personality.  There were other reasons as well – the community was amazing and supportive in a time where I needed that.  But I can’t deny that it helped […]

The Fear of Unoriginality

The Fear of Unoriginality

Today I’m going to talk about my favorite WIP. I’m one of those writers who loves first drafts, and basically never gets to a second draft.  I have two WIPs that have made it to draft two: this is one of them.  It’s my favorite story to write and has the most lively characters.  The world in my head is so expansive that I’ve started two spinoffs (last year’s Camp NaNo novel, Quest, is one of them). The first story I ever wrote, the one I started drafting when I was twelve, is Fate.  I was heavily inspired by Tamora Pierce’s The Circle of […]

The First 10 Books I Reviewed on My Blog

The First 10 Books I Reviewed on My Blog

Did you know that The Literary Phoenix has been online since 2009? I will fully admit that I haven’t been consistent with my blog over the years.  I’ve taken breaks.  And by breaks, I’m talking one post every six months for years.  I was not a good blogger for 85% of the time that I’ve been here.  But there’s been book reviews over the years. Some of the reviews are for books I wouldn’t read again… but there are plenty of books I read back in 2011 that I would still read again!  I can tell you that my reviewing has […]

Reviews on Your Blog: Worth It?

Reviews on Your Blog: Worth It?

On and off in the last several years, I’ve bounced around about my stance on including book reviews on my blog.  Even though it’s a book blog.  There’s a lot of variety in the way book bloggers handle their content, and I think it’s important to include whatever content you personally want, and stick to it. A lot of my content is book reviews.  I make sure to include two non-reviews a week (sometimes more), but ultimately, you’re looking at about 65% of my content being reviews.  For a while, I felt like this was just filler content.  But I’ve […]

How Books Grab My Attention

How Books Grab My Attention

Most readers have their niche.  For me, that niche is YA and fantasy with a peppering of historical fiction on the side.  My tastes haven’t really changed much over the years – I read the occasional thriller these days, but for the most part, I’m in the same world I was in middle school. Within my niche, however, there are a few things that make a book catch my eye.  Sometimes it’s word of mouth, sometimes it’s just bright and colorful.  Either way, even as a bibliophile, it’s important to have some standards.  There are way too many books out there […]

Classics on My TBR

Classics on My TBR

I pride myself on my willingness to pick up classics outside of academic assignments.  Classics get buried in the reading world.  This is in part because they are so commonly assigned in school that there’s a bit of a rebellious stigma about them: “No, I read it in eleventh grade English and I HATED it and I will never read it again.”  But the other reason, and I think the REALLY BIG one, is that a lot of them don’t hold up.  Sure, the story may be interesting, but if that’s the case, the writing may be trying (Dickens), or there […]
