Five Things I Learned From Camp NaNo 2018

Five Things I Learned From Camp NaNo 2018

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve done it.  On Sunday, July 29th I validated my Camp NaNoWriMo novel.  Even my word processor – Dabble – was excited for me.  I got confetti fireworks and everything. As I’m writing this post on the 29th – mere seconds after validating – it feels… wrong.  I hate looking at this beautiful, delightful winner’s screen and feeling like I cheated.  Because, in a way, I have. For me, part of what makes NaNoWriMo, NaNoWriMo is finishing the novel.  And I haven’t.  I’m nowhere near.  This is one of the reasons why I tend to drift towards Camp […]

Beautiful Books 2017: Ashes to Ashes

Beautiful Books 2017: Ashes to Ashes

So when I originally saw this prompt on Paper Fury, I was 100% definitely going to use The Story Collector, a story I’ve been picking at for three years and is super long and nowhere near done.  But for the last week or so, I’ve had an invasive story burrowing in my mind.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Where you have way more story ideas than time?  I have a whole notebook of ideas.  Enough for a dozen novels on top of the drafts I already have and need both editing and sequels. This one has been invasive, though. I try […]

I’m Trying Aesthetic Boards Because Why Not?

I’m Trying Aesthetic Boards Because Why Not?

I’ve noted that a lot of the writerly blogpeople I follow like to make aesthetic boards on Pinterest to inspire their souls.  I have NEVER tried this before, but the conscensus seems to be that it’s the BEES KNEES. So I’m pretty good and stuck on The Land of Dark and Broken Things so I figured – HEY, WHY NOT? So. In short – The Land of Dark and Broken Things… It evolved from ‘Tweens (which is now a quartet because remember that old plot? Gone).  There’s a four-part world of imagination that is rotting and becoming corrupted as its source (human […]

Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Update #2

Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Update #2

Sometimes, things just don’t go the way I planned them. Last week, I finished reading The Night Circus.  It was glorious.  I loved it so much that I went and purchased the hardcover copy the next day.  This post is not about The Night Circus but if you want to read all about my love of it, you can do so here. My point is that sometimes you read a book that comes together so perfectly, it makes you go back and reflect on your own work.  The Night Circus did that for me, and I spent several hours that day […]

Camp NaNoWriMo 2017; Update #1

Camp NaNoWriMo 2017; Update #1

Sometimes, characters surprise you. It’s the reason that I have difficulty writing  on an outline, and why I can’t seem to keep a story consistent between drafts. I’ve been sick the last couple of days (sinus infection, ugh) and hadn’t been writing.  I sat down this morning to revise chapter seven.  In this chapter, Lucy has learned that the things she imagines becomes real, so she decides to create a way for herself to escape.  Only, naturally, it doesn’t go as planned. In this rewrite, Lucy’s character has evolved a lot.  When I wrote this story back in 2011, I […]

The Creature

The Creature

Wulf wrapped his fingers around the rock. It was jagged, and dirty. He felt its rough edges cutting against his palm, but he didn’t care. He cared only about the weight of it, and the truth of his aim. He lifted his weapon slightly off the ground so that the blades of grass barely brushed against the bottom and his fingers. They were like little bug bites, and he lifted his fingers a hair higher, the heaviness of the rock pulling at his muscles at the awkward height. Wulf forced himself to ignore the discomfort – the beast was more […]
