My Day at Rhode Island Comic Con!

My Day at Rhode Island Comic Con!

Last Saturday, a small group of us went up to Rhode Island Comic Con.  We went last year and it’s SO COOL but also a big bundle of stress.  I remember going last year and telling myself “Okay, so the panels are awesome, but if we ever go again, can we NOT go on Saturday?!”  So of course, we went on Saturday again. RICC is one of the biggest fan conventions on the east coast, right after NYCC.  I live a lot closer to Rhode Island, so that’s my con of choice.  Like SDCC and NYCC, it’s huge.  It has […]

The Halfway Update, Including Ragnarok & Stranger Things

The Halfway Update, Including Ragnarok & Stranger Things

Hello my beautiful people!  Happy Monday! November’s already halfway over, and for you Americans like me, we’re just a little over a week until Thanksgiving – ack!  I haven’t even gotten a turkey yet, and we’re still finalizing plans.  I’m a super organized person, but my extended family isn’t, so I’m losing my mind!  But that glorious turkey coma will be worth it in the end.  Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans is one of my top three dinners, so I’m looking forward to it. Well, I’ve been a busy bumblebee these last two weeks.  Work continues to be crazy […]

Gumbo is the Queen of Delicious Soups (+ Recipe)

Gumbo is the Queen of Delicious Soups (+ Recipe)

Here in New England, we have two cultural soups:  Clam Chowdah, and Lobster Bisque.  People travel here for these soups.  They make it a summer staple to go to Bahstan and get some clam chowdah (after pahking the cah in Hahvaad yahd… okay, enough of the stereotypical Boston lingo).  I am not one of these people.  I have a seafood allergy, and even then just the idea of chowder makes my stomach churn. I like something that packs a little more of a punch.  Something rich and howling and sassy.  Something… from Louisiana. I’m a gumbo girl. I discovered gumbo in […]

August Wrap Up! // Featuring: Lakes, Cakes, AND DOC BROWN!

Welcome Ladies & Gents, to the August Wrap Up! August has been a busy month!  For me, there’s been vacations and birthdays and a trip to the dentist (BLECH), and a solar eclipse!  I am so so proud of myself because I have posted every day this month!  I know a lot of people are heading back to school within a week, if they haven’t already.  Can you believe summer’s almost over?  SHEESH.  I think that we all have had a crazy month, so let’s get down to it!  EXCITING THINGS ARE AFOOT, MY PHOENIX FRIENDS. No, not that kind […]

Literacy in the Western World

Literacy in the Western World

In the United States, we have plenty of problems.  There’s a growing gap between social classes.  There’s an abundance of homelessness.  There’s an epidemic of corporate greed, and yet these are all definitively first world problems.  Most of us, even in the lower class, don’t suffer from dysentery or undernourishment or war.  Our problems are limited to our growth as a nation and while some of them are very big and real (homelessness in the nation’s largest cities is astounding), most of them do not affect our ability to survive. There is a chain of human needs that starts at […]

The Rise and Fall of the Written Word

The Rise and Fall of the Written Word

I had both the pleasure and disappointment of seeing the movie Tomorrowland last Monday.  I was amazed at the imagination at the beginning, the beauty of this whole remarkable parallel universe, and I chuckled at all of Disney’s cute reference drops (the song from the “Carousel of Progress” and the debut of “It’s A Small World”).  There was that moment of breathlessness, and hope and imagination.  Even into the middle of the film as the main character is being chased out of a Space Age collectibles shop…. And then, as suddenly as it was beautiful, it was awkward and sideways […]
