The other day, while I was reading this, I made a noise general disgruntlement.  My husband cocked an eyebrow and asked: if I wasn’t enjoyed the book, why not just put it down?  And here’s the messy, complicated answer to that.  Because Empress of All Seasons is one of my owned books, and because it’s an #OwnVoices story, I feel like I owe it to the book to give it that extra chance. But if I’m being completely honest with myself, I have to come to terms with the fact I didn’t enjoy my experience with Empress of All Seasons. There […]

In my review of The Girl At Midnight, I said this series was original, but written in a way that didn’t leave me invested or even interested… and I wouldn’t be continuing the series. Then, for some reason, The Shadow Hour ended up on my TBR.  I think it was a mix of cover love, and having completely forgotten why I didn’t like The Girl at Midnight.  I started listening and BAM! I was immediately hit with all the things I didn’t like from book one.  The way character behavior is described in a sort of sideways manner – “so-and-so played with […]

It’s a rare treat for me to read a sequel in the same year as book one, but I couldn’t help with this one! I absolutely loved Walk on Earth a Stranger and it set me up for some really high expectations for Like a River Glorious.  And guess what?  Book two did not disappoint. A lot of trilogies fall victim to a book 2 slump.  Like a River Glorious sets itself up to be a powerful story that continues Lee’s adventures into California while still managing as its own solid story.  Our villains grow a little more villainous, and our […]

A Song Below Water is not a book to be taken lightly, nor one you can expect to just breeze through.  Even though it’s short, there are some powerful messages to be had here.  It’s always an excellent example of how magic and contemporary issues do not need to be mutually exclusive. At first, I didn’t know what to think about this book.  I didn’t not like it… I was just… lost.  I’ll admit it took me a few chapters of careful reading to get the pulse of the world, to understand that sirens and eloko and gargoyles are accepted […]

The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi

The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from NetGalley and Wednesday Books in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I have come to crave Roshani Chokshi’s lyrical writing, but it’s not just the writing that makes The Silvered Serpents excellent – as a second book, it more than lived up to the expectations of its predecessor. The Gilded Wolves gave us a tantalizing steampunk world with memorable characters and heaps of adventure.  The Silvered Serpents ascends the story to the realm of treasure hunting, secrets, and more than […]
