It took me a little while to get into Ayesha at Last – at the beginning I thought it was going to be another run-of-the-mill romance and as y’all know… that is not my genre. The deeper I got into the book the more I came to enjoy it. In particular, I really liked Ayesha herself. If I’m going to read romance, this is how I like it. Ayesha at Last is down-to-Earth and doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of racism. There are a lot of shades of the Muslim faith in this book, and as someone who had […]

Rise to the Sun is Leah Johnson’s sophomore novel. There’s a lot of good to it! For example, there’s a wide variety or representation in parental backgrounds and friendship dynamics. All the characters are interesting enough, and I really enjoyed the musical festival setting – why aren’t there more music festival settings in books? Lets make it a thing. Still, Rise to the Sun is not as strong of a book as You Should See Me in a Crown and I’d like to dig into “why”. At its base, Rise to the Sun is still an entertaining book and 100% […]

I absolutely loved this book. That’s an understatement. For three days, I lived and breathed Let’s Talk About Love. Do y’all remember Tess of the Road?  Remember how much I love Tess of the Road?  Remember how often I try to plug it because I love the book so much?  It has a new friend.  I usually write my reviews the evening after I finish a book but I’m sitting here a whole day later and blubbering about how much I loved it.  I’m going to try and focus in now and do my best to tell you why. For most people, Let’s Talk About […]

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from LibraryThing and Candlewick Press in exchange for an honest review. Battle of the Bands feels a lot like a chain story where one author wrote a scene and then the next author had to write another scene and so forth.  I’ve never read a short story collection that was both  short story collection and a complete story all at once, and it was really interesting.  Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.  I felt certain stories to be stronger than others.  Sometimes they flowed really well from one story to the next, […]

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? has been burning a hole in my audiobook TBR for a while now. I usually save my Audible library backlog books for vacations and was expecting to listen to it while in Greece, but A Promised Land ended up being quite long and I didn’t get to my audiobook backlog. I’ve been thinking about it since I came back and decided, you know what? I’m going to sneak it in. Written by mortician extraordinaire Caitlin Doughty, Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? is an honest and informative Q&A about death, dying, mortuary procedure, and other such […]
