Usually I am a “books before movies” kinda gal, but I watched the first three seasons of True Blood plus some before picking up the first Sookie Stackhouse book.  Fortunately, the long haul with the Harry Potter series has taught me to view books and films as separate entities, so I appreciate the television show while still loving the book.  This is not to say that there weren’t difference (boy were there differences) but I have learned not to get enraged about them. Sometimes, reading the book after seeing the films/show allows for an added appreciation, and this was […]

Reading this book was very bittersweet for me. Artemis Fowl is the last series that I have been reading since I was a kid (okay, high school) that hasn’t finished yet… and now it has. It’s been a tough few years – Harry Potter’s done, the Hunger Games are done, and now even Artemis Fowl’s all finished. That said, however, I couldn’t’ve asked for a better ending. No spoilers, though. I felt like I could have read this book in an hour. The writing was a fresh as ever, and all the favorite characters make at least a brief […]

I still really enjoyed this book… while simultaneously finding myself very annoyed by it. I can’t attach to the characters at all, especially as I grow older and they feel young, and yet, I am completely drawn into their story. Just as I’m thinking I’ve got the whole story pegged, something changes, and I’m thrown way off track. I love that in books. My occasional frustration with the superficiality of the characters is the only thing that keeps this from being five stars for me. I like the plot, I like representation of the vampires. Generally, I really like […]

A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

I get latched on to all the wrong characters. A Clash of Kings saw the removal of Eddard Stark (obviously) from the character narratives, and much of the focus turns to the place of fighting. We see the addition of Theon Greyjoy, who I decidedly don’t care about, and of another man in Stannis’ care who obviously I also didn’t like because I cannot be bothered to conjure his name. Here, Martin splits the reader to watch the real battle, instead of the individual characters. As a character writer, this is less to my taste. We see nearly nothing […]

Love, love, love! I have been intending to pick this book up for, I kid you not, seven years. It was well worth the wait. I remember the girl sitting next to me in tenth grade English reading it, and I asked her what it was about (we were reading Jane Eyre in class, which I thought was ghastly by-the-by, but that’s one person’s opinion). I’ve always had so many books to read I just never got around to it, but wow. I’m glad I did. Such originality and creativity. As I mentioned, I am not, in any way, […]
