I didn’t add this book to my TBR for the longest time. I dunno, it just didn’t seem like I would like it?  I finally put it on my TBR earlier this year, and I wasn’t in a rush to get to it, except that Dani from Perspective of a Writer reached out to do a buddy read, and this was one of the books she offered to choose from. So, I figured – eh, why not? As I turns out, I really appreciated I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.  There’s a lot going on in this book that […]

Eragon is one of those books I feel a strong connection to, because I read it over and over again in my youth.  I grew up with both Eragon and Eldest, even though I didn’t finish the cycle until I was an adult.  The story of the dragon rider and the evil king captured my imagination, as tales of good and evil are wont to do. There is a bittersweet sadness to coming back to a book I loved so much as a high schooler only to find it riddled with flaws.  I want so desperately to be in love with Eragon […]

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

I expected a lot from The Fifth Season.  Not so much from this book, but from anything written by N.K. Jeminsin.  I have heard a lot about this author and the depth of her worlds.  I wanted a deep fantasy tale with characters that tempt you into their stories.  I wanted a book that teased me never to put it down.  The Fifth Season met my expectations. There is some discourse about the actual genre of The Fifth Season.  I’m going against the grain to say this feels more like science fiction than fantasy to me.  First of all, it’s dystopia, which fits […]

Timeless Tales of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter

Timeless Tales of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter

So nobody really talks about it anymore, and I don’t know any friends who have read these tales to their children, but Beatrix Potter is such a classic.  These short tidbits, written over a hundred years ago, are so familiar today.  It was such strange nostalgia going back not just to childhood favorites, but to stories I remember having read to me, and the memory of illustrated collections we used to have. I’m going to try something a bit different here, because this is a collection of very short children’s stories.  So, rather than try to summarize the collection as […]

Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George

What a well done middle grade novel. 🙂 A lot of middle grade novels feel a bit overly ridiculous for no reason, throwing any sensible storyline to the wind, preferring ridiculous humor to a sensible plot.  Tuesdays at the Castle maintains a more-or-less clever storyline, but doesn’t sacrifice the troublesome wink of humor so common in middle grade. In Tuesdays at the Castle we have three main characters and a variety of friends and villains.  The characters do lack a bit of depth, becoming more and more shallows the more minor their role.  Even Princess Cecelia if not very well fleshed […]
