It took me a long time to get into this book. Crimson Bound has a really rich, vibrant world, but the writing moves at its own gradual pace, and the characters are hit or miss. The romance, too, was major eye roll material, but I suppose you can’t have everything! The Great Forest was where this book truly shined. I found Rosamund Hodge’s descriptions of a dark, malicious forest come to life to be both chilling and exciting. Particularly in the segment in the middle, when Rachelle and Armand ride with the Wild Hunt… the bits of me in love […]

What can I possibly say about The Raven Boys that hasn’t already been said?  This novel enchanted me.  I know that the YA bookish community loves the Raven Cycle, and now I see that they love it with good reason. Going in, I really thought that this would end up being one of those mushy books where the girl falls in love with a gaggle of boys and has to choose, and two of the boys fall in love with each other, and it’s adorable if that’s the sort of thing you like.  I was ready for romance.  I wasn’t looking […]

I’ve been waffling back and forth about To Kill a Kingdom ever before I read it.  The reviews out there are really mixed.  There are a few reviewers whose views usually align pretty closely with mine, but even among those there are some starkly different views.  So when I went into To Kill a Kingdom, I didn’t know what to expect. The long and short of it is simply this:  depending on what you want from this book, your enjoyment of it will vary.  From a fantasy and a retelling, I’m usually looking for solid worldbuilding, and from a any book I […]

I went into this book with very low expectations, because most the people I know in the blogosphere either hated it, or DNF’d it.  I wasn’t looking forward to reading it, and I even waited a week after pulling it from my TBR Jar before I started it. Then I read it in a day. I won’t go as far as to say that Everless is a perfect novel.  The attention to detail waxes and wanes.  The characters are spotty and a little shallow at times.  But it’s good, too.  It’s highly entertaining.  There are twists – though not entirely unexpected […]

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

I have a really weird relationship with The Winner’s Curse. I’m struggling here to find words to describe this book – I just… don’t know how I feel?  Kestrel is fine, and Arin is fine, and the storyline is fine and the worldbuilding is fine, and I guess when it comes down to it, The Winner’s Curse is just fine.  I enjoyed it enough, but I didn’t find it particularly memorable. This novel is marketed as a fantasy, and I will give it that the world itself seems fantastical in its elements.  There’s a Roman vibe to the world – from conversations about villas […]
