Harry Potter: The Prequel by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter: The Prequel by J.K. Rowling

I feel like I can no longer call myself a Harry Potter fan, because this short story was “released” ten years ago, and I didn’t know it existed.  I’ve always had a soft spot for the Marauders, although as I’ve grown older I recognize that they were definitely bullies.  Still, I’ve always wanted Rowling to write a companion series about them (I’m all set with the sequels, plays, etc.).  Another reason why I’m flabbergasted that I didn’t know about this short story. First of all, I need to point out that I really appreciate the Sirius Black pun.  This is a […]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

Harry’s quest is nearing an end. Since Dumbledore’s death, Harry has known it is his turn to pick up the mantle of destroying Voldemort, and that he will not be able to return home to Hogwarts.  As the hunt for Horcruxes looms over him, he has a single lead:  the fake necklace and the note signed “R.A.B.”.  He plans to go alone, and bring Voldemort to his end. What follows is a cross-country adventure as Harry – joined by his friends – break into Gringotts, duel death eaters, and are intrigued by the story of something called “The Deathly Hallows”.  […]

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

So many things have changed at Hogwarts. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a complete turnaround from the angsty nightmare that was Order of the Phoenix.  There are EMOTIONS and it is BEAUTIFUL and character development happens and I LOVE IT. Half-Blood Prince is my favorite book after Prisoner of Azkaban.  There is so much going on, and a BIG adventure is starting, and THINGS ARE GETTING REALLY REALLY REAL.  I could go on and on about how this book is delicious and how Rowling is my Queen.  How the writing is perfect, the characters are perfect, the story is perfect, I […]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

Confession:  I like some Harry Potter books better than others. I have read Prisoner of Azkaban a couple dozen times.  … I have read Order of the Phoenix three times.  First, when it came out.  Second, right before the movie came out.  Third, this time.  This time was by far the best, and for one glaring reason:  CAPSLOCK!Harry is a lot more tolerable when you can’t see all the angry capital letters.  There are aspects of OotP that are so cool, and the cast of characters is great, but this is still my least favorite in the series.  That said?  Still four hearts. […]

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

I love this book.  Either by audio or hardcopy, I think I visit it at least once a year.  As such, it’ll probably be reviewed many times.  Every read is different, after all. Characters ❤︎ The third year is when the trio start to come into their own and become more complex as characters.  Harry is re-affronted with his parents’ deaths in a new and raw way, Ron begins to fight for his own happiness – whether that’s in defense of his pets or himself – and Hermione’s reaction to Harry’s Firebolt and Divination shows her less tolerant side.  We also […]

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

One thing I particularly appreciate about the Harry Potter series is that Rowling never portrays the adults as stupid.  In a lot of children’s books, the children have to go and unravel everything because the adults are too blind to see a hand in front of their face.  In this series, they’re trying, but it just seems Harry has all the breaks.  Oh well. I remember reading this book when I was younger and Chamber was definitely low down on my list of favorites.  In retrospect, I think that’s because (spoiler) Hermione’s out-of-commission for most of the book.  Like both Sorcerer’s Stone […]
