Bookstores: The World of All the Best Things

Bookstores: The World of All the Best Things

Every Christmas, I watch The Santa Clause.  It’s an older Christmas movie now, starring Tim Allen as its lead.  A busy businessman knocks Santa off his roof and is forced to take up the mantle.  There’s a scene in this film where they arrive at the north pole and it’s magical.  There’s a train that goes between the different sections and a sweet little elf brings them the best hot chocolate in the world.  That seems like one of the best places in the world.  The little boy, Charlie, thinks it’s basically heaven. Book stores are a little like that. Books stores […]

Reviews: A Necessary Evil We Love to Hate

Bad Blogger Confession:  I almost never read reviews. It’s not that you’re doing them wrong!  There are so many posts about reviews.  They’re hard to write.  They’re hard to read.  Make them better!  Make them shorter.  Make them colorful! I’m gonna be honest with you – unless the the book itself stands out to me, I’m no more likely to click on your review overloaded with GIFs than I am if it’s 6 paragraphs.  Book reviews are tough because they’re only fun if you are: Looking to add books to your TBR. Have already read the book and OMG SQUEE LET US DISCUSS! […]

All My Bookmarks Are Beautiful

All My Bookmarks Are Beautiful

Between reading excessively and getting loads of book boxes, it was bound to happen that I ended up with a bunch of bookmarks.  Whether or not you use them, you have to recognize the bookish fun within bookmarks – they’re little bits of art we hide in our books. Now, I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to using a nearby letter or tissue to mark my place if I’m feeling too lazy to get up.  But I do usually use a bookmark in my paperbacks.  I use the dust jacket flaps for hardcover books, but bookmarks are […]

A Brief History of Why I Don’t Do Horror

A Brief History of Why I Don’t Do Horror

Once upon a time there was a little girl who thought her father spoke only very serious truths.  She listened to him with rapt ears and unwavering attention, taking careful note of each story and fable he fed her.  She swallowed the morals like sweet, small chocolates.  She was naive. This girl is me. When I was a little girl, my father used to tell me stories.  Some of these were to teach me things like “clean your room” and “eat your dinner”.  Others were for fun.  And some were meant to scare me.  For whatever reason, I latched on […]

Mary Shelley, Queen of Horror

Mary Shelley, Queen of Horror

When it comes to horror, I go promptly in the other direction.  I do not like to be scared.  If I feel like being terrified, I’ll sit and have a nice, long think about oblivion.  I don’t read much horror.  I find books are easier to digest than horror films, but mostly I’m just the person curled in a corner convinced that a murderous ghost is out to get them. I have 81 books in my collection tagged with “horror”.  Most of these are vampire books (Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton).  Then there’s Stephen King and a handful of Goosebumps or […]
