Is Your Protagonist Worthy?

Is Your Protagonist Worthy?

Lately, I’ve been wrestling with the importance – or lack thereof – of my WIPs.  I think this stems from my own existential struggles.  Why do my character’s stories matter?  Why are they worth telling?  How extraordinary does a person have to be to have a worthwhile story to tell? I struggle with this the most in contemporaries.  When I write a fantasy, I find it’s easier create extraordinary characters with extra interesting backstories, missions, and motivators.  In contemporaries… I struggle.  For example, I want to share Emma’s little corner of Vermont and her friends and her love of MMORPGs and […]

Overpowered Characters: When They Are Too Much & When They Are Just Right

I hate Jean Grey. If you’re not an X-Men fan, you probably don’t know what I’m talking about.  Jean Grey, aka “The Dark Phoenix”, is a mutant with extremely powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities.  If you saw the 2019 film Dark Phoenix starring Sophie Turner, you may remember Jean Grey as that-teen-who-stepped-out-into-space-without-a-helmet-and-used-all-her-superpowers-and-still-survived-because-she’s-Jean-Grey.  You only need to watch the movie for 10 minutes to know how the whole thing is going to play out. I cannot TELL you guys how happy I am that all the chaos of May has died down and here we are on the brink of summer.  I’ve been working really hard to get back into the flow of things – moving really messes up my mental schedule.  I’ve got a buuunch of posts to write up in the next few weeks but we’re going to make it a good one. Plus, I’m just really excited that summer is rolling around.  I’m not normally a summer person, but New England weather is wonky and we’ve had says that are 35F following […]

Character Profiles and Why They Are Amazing

Character Profiles and Why They Are Amazing

I write better when I use character profiles. I find it so, so easy to dive head first into a WIP and lose track of the details.  In Strange, one of my beta readers circled passages asking “is she fourteen or fifteen” and “I thought Ariella had brown eyes?” When you’re working with a lot of different characters, base details like this are easy to lose if they’re not particularly important to the story.  Should I have caught those details while drafting?  Yes.  But with a character profile, at least I have a frame of reference. So… you want to make […]
