Seven Debuts that Were Absolutely Awesome

Seven Debuts that Were Absolutely Awesome

Debut novels can be tricky.  There’s a lot of pressure, because half the time we reviewers go into these books thinking, “It’s a debut.  It’s not going to be that amazing, because it’s a debut.”  This stereotype pops up because the frequency of the truth of it – sloppy writing and subplots that go nowhere are common offenders. But that’s not always the case.  Many debuts are passable, containing only forgivable annoyances.  Every once in a while, I stumble across one with a je ne sais quoi that hooks me.  This could happen for any number of reasons, and these “awesome debuts” […]

Three Reasons to Go Back and Reread Books

Three Reasons to Go Back and Reread Books

As a blogger, sometimes I feel guilty about rereading books.  There are so many books out there that I should be reading, and because I blog, those are all books I could be promoting.  As it stands, my TBR is over 1200 books – enough to keep me busy reading for twelve years at my pace, and that’s assuming I don’t add anything else to it – highly unlikely. So, with that virtual stack looming over me, sometimes rereading books make me feel guilty.  But it shouldn’t. Today, I want to offer three reasons why rereading books is not only […]

The Disney Book Tag

The Disney Book Tag

This one is a bit of an oldie, but as a Disney fan, it was definitely a tag I needed to feature on my blog.  Before I go too deeply into that, though, I do want to send out a lot of love to the folks who were furloughed and eventually laid off by Disney.  So many people give their loves to the parks and company and making magic happen, and it’s heartbreaking any time something like this happens.  While I understand the business need of downsizing when profits dip (side-eyeing the overpaid execs here, though), that doesn’t make it […]

Series vs. Standalones: Which Do You Prefer?

As a reader, I’ve never been one to devour whole book series at a time.  Even in a world where Netflix binges are part of a person’s regular repertoire, I patiently sift through series one episode at a time, over the course of several months.  I know that would drive a lot of people crazy but… I’m patient.  I have time.  I prefer to savor the experience. Up until recently, it felt like every new book was part of a trilogy.  If not a trilogy, then an extended series.  Or it was a spinoff of something else written by the […]

In Which It’s Too Hot, I Do Two Readathons, & I Bombard You With Reviews: The July Wrap Up!

Good morning everyone! I’ll be completely honest, July didn’t go quite the way I was expecting in the book department!  That’s not a bad thing, but it was different!  I was planning to join with the Camp NaNoWriMo spirit and do a lot of writing and learning about writing, and instead I ended up participating in two readathons! It’s been fun but stressful.  It’s also been hot here in New England!  The heat waves have been coming by brutally, so it’s be a good time to read. And the reading?  The reading was good this month.  I actually delayed this wrap […]
