Good morning my beautiful monsters! ? I have been holding on to this book tag for almost a whole year, ever since Heather @ The Frozen Library tagged me last fall.  I waited to make the tag a little more aesthetically appropriate (I pre-write my posts so far ahead that I was booked into December when she tagged me ?) but now we’re in beautiful September again and !!! I love fall ?.  So excited to be here, y’all. I did a little digging and was able to track this tag back to being attributed to booktuber Alina Milena.  It looks like […]

A Very Brief History of the Horror Genre

A Very Brief History of the Horror Genre

One of my best friends loves horror. Every Halloween, he likes to dress up as Michael Myers from the Halloween movie.  When he does this, he’s totally in character and creepy.  You can’t ask the guy where the extra bags of candy are because he just stares at you behind that creepy mask and says… nothing… ever.  Until Halloween is over. I haven’t seen him dress up in a couple years (I believe his four-year-old is not crazy about the costume, and she’s daddy’s girl), but when I think of horror, I always think of him. Universally, I think a few things come to […]

Have you guys heard about this “Great American Read” television show?  If you use the Goodreads web platform, it’s difficult to miss – the ad has been plastered all over mine for a couple months. There’s a lot of interesting books on this list, although I can’t imagine choosing just one book for an entire country.  PBS came up with 100 books for this competition, a mixture of popular modern reads and timeless classics.  I’ve read 37, how many have you read? 1984 by George Orwell ✓ A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole X A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving X A Separate […]

Stories from around the world.

Stories from around the world. <3

It’s so easy to fall into our own culture without looking outside ourselves and finding the places and the stories that exist outside out own continent.  I think movies like Black Panther are important in that way – praising the beauty of people rarely seen and reminding us that there’s a greater world outside our front door… and we are all one people. Before I write any more of this post, I want to apologize for the whiteness of all these characters.  The beauty of writing an internationally inspired Top Ten is that we have the opportunity to showcase various […]

Mary Shelley, Queen of Horror

Mary Shelley, Queen of Horror

When it comes to horror, I go promptly in the other direction.  I do not like to be scared.  If I feel like being terrified, I’ll sit and have a nice, long think about oblivion.  I don’t read much horror.  I find books are easier to digest than horror films, but mostly I’m just the person curled in a corner convinced that a murderous ghost is out to get them. I have 81 books in my collection tagged with “horror”.  Most of these are vampire books (Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton).  Then there’s Stephen King and a handful of Goosebumps or […]
