Building a Likable Monster: How Villains Keep Stealing Our Hearts

Building a Likable Monster: How Villains Keep Stealing Our Hearts

When I first read Shadow and Bone, I was confused.  About a lot of things, but mostly… I had a hard time understanding why so many people loved the Darkling character. For those who haven’t read Shadow and Bone and aren’t familiar with the Grishaverse, I won’t go into too much detail here as I don’t want to spoil things.  The Darkling is a powerful magic-worker in the world and there’s (in my opinion) consistent evidence of his nefarious ways.  And it’s constantly tossed aside by the easily-besotted protagonist.  And even more casually tossed aside by readers.  He never appealed to me […]

Dishonor on You, Dishonor on your Cow, and Also HI! It’s the Disney Sidekick Tag!

You know, I have a lot of saved tags in my drafts, and they’re all super fun, so I feel like it’s time to do more than one tag a month.  🙂 For my readers in the United States, I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July last week!  We didn’t do anything much (we usually don’t) but it’s always lovely to have a day off!  The only thing I miss about the Fourth of July celebrations in my childhood is the fireworks, but alas, personal fireworks are illegal in the state of Massachusetts, so…. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Today’s tag comes from […]

“Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” Books – #Top5Tuesday

I think everyone has books they devour.  These are the books that light you up inside and even if you have to pause in your reading to go adulting or to school or whatever, your brain is still where with the characters and following the plot down different possible paths and you simply cannot shake yourself from the world. That, mes chers, is what makes an excellent book. These are definitely the types of books that cause reading slumps because when you come out of them, your head is still spinning and life feels meaningless and how can another book ever add up?! […]

10 Book to Movie Adaptations I Actually LOVED

Most of us bookish sorts talk about film adaptations with contempt.  We see the stories we know and love adapted into monstrosities that make our hearts ache and misrepresent everything we love to the non-reading public.  Believe me, I can relate.  I watched this happen with particular favorites, like Ready Player One and The Dark Tower. All that said, I’ve also come across several book-related films that I have particularly enjoyed.  Some of these weren’t even particularly faithful adaptations… but they managed to retain (for me) the spirit of the book and brought to life characters I adored.  In the bookish community, […]

The First 10 Books I Reviewed on My Blog

Posted April 23, 2019 in Memes // 6 Comments

Did you know that The Literary Phoenix has been online since 2009? I will fully admit that I haven’t been consistent with my blog over the years.  I’ve taken breaks.  And by breaks, I’m talking one post every six months for years.  I was not a good blogger for 85% of the time that I’ve been here.  But there’s been book reviews over the years. Some of the reviews are for books I wouldn’t read again… but there are plenty of books I read back in 2011 that I would still read again!  I can tell you that my reviewing has […]
