Happy Pride Month to all of you who are: Out as your authentic self. Unable to come out for safety reasons. Not ready to come out. Still questioning your gender and/or sexuality. Transitioning. Not ready to transition. Excited to share your truth with the world. Tired of explaining your sexuality. Out and private about it. Out to some people but not to everyone. Struggling with guardians/friends who don’t support your sexuality. Searching for the right pronouns. Found your pronouns. Everyone else I may have missed! Pride Month is special and important to me. This community is a home in so […]

Seven Debuts that Were Absolutely Awesome

Seven Debuts that Were Absolutely Awesome

Debut novels can be tricky.  There’s a lot of pressure, because half the time we reviewers go into these books thinking, “It’s a debut.  It’s not going to be that amazing, because it’s a debut.”  This stereotype pops up because the frequency of the truth of it – sloppy writing and subplots that go nowhere are common offenders. But that’s not always the case.  Many debuts are passable, containing only forgivable annoyances.  Every once in a while, I stumble across one with a je ne sais quoi that hooks me.  This could happen for any number of reasons, and these “awesome debuts” […]

10 Series Books That are Just as Good (if not BETTER) Than Book One

I am a big, big fan of NaNoWriMo. You may have noticed this from years of posts about it, plus the fact that I proudly display my winner’s badges on my sidebar.  I think that NaNoWriMo is a great community writing event for all ages.  Is it perfect?  Of course not – some people positively hate it.  Plus, the content one puts out during NaNoWriMo will be, by nature, subpar at best.  But that’s not the point.  The point is we are writing and we are writing together. Love, love, love it.  You will see nothing but adoration for the event on […]

With another round of Camp NaNoWriMo tucked under my belt, I find myself reviewing one of the aspects of writing I feel like I’ve really mastered: procrastination.  Normal NaNoWriMo is bad enough, but these days when the world is just a little heavier than usual, productivity is particularly difficult. So, if you’re like me and know you should be working on your WIP, but at the same time… you just don’t have the heart, here are a few alternative activities you may wish to try! Be warned:  almost none of these will help you make any progress on your project.  Proceed with caution! […]
