Ghost Stories You Simply Must Read

Ghost Stories You Simply Must Read

Almost everyone likes a thrill every once and a while.  While I don’t love horror novels, I do like ghost stories!  And sometimes, they come unexpected.  I’ve read a few books in the last couple years that I thought were going to be about witches or mermaids, but ended up being ghost stories!  Color me thrilled. As Halloween is tomorrow, there’s still a little time for spooks and thrills!  If you’re keen for a ghost story, may I suggest nine of the ones I’ve read recently?  I enjoyed them all.    The Legend of Sleepy Hollow / Featuring the famous headless […]

Why Were These Books on My TBR So Long?!

Why Were These Books on My TBR So Long?!

Guys, let my life be a lesson to you: pay attention to your TBR. You put stuff on there for a reason.  You put it there because someone said the book was AMAZING.  Because the cover was glamorous.  Because something in the summary called to your heart and you knew you needed that book.  Sure, you’ll go through and some of them will be duds.  But some of them will be magical. I am notorious for falling to series and rereads and ignoring my TBR.  Mistake. In the last year, I’ve gone back to the beginning of my TBR and reading […]

My Literary Doppelgangers

My Literary Doppelgangers

In 28 years of reading, I have found only five characters that I deeply relate to.  Not every aspect of them suits me, but as a white woman with plenty of cultural representation, I find it a little surprising I’ve only related to five so closely.  I think it’s because I search for personal and societal representation more than cultural (though doubtless I would be more interested in cultural representation if I was not represented). There is such a feeling of joy and comradery when I find a character that I love, who I see my own behaviors in, and […]

My Best of the Best, Creme de la Creme Reads of 2017

My Best of the Best, Creme de la Creme Reads of 2017

This is the inevitable post of the year, when we have to go through our amazing list of wonderful reads and pick favorites.  Guys, this is the worst.  It is hard.  There are so many good books that came out this year, but there are also a lot of great books that I read that came out last year.  Or two years ago.  Or ten years ago. Rather than just feature 2017 books, I’ve chosen to drive myself crazy and feature the reads that met and exceeded expectations this year.  The ones that wrapped me up in their worlds and wouldn’t let […]

Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama

Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama

This book had me hooked from the beginning. When I went into Monstrous Beauty, my opinions on it were 100% “Ugh. A mermaid book?  I probably won’t like this one, either.  Well – here goes!”  …  I WAS SO SO WRONG.  This book is beautifully written, the characters are deep and interesting, and the story is just magical enough to be fantasy, but mostly it reads like a contemporary ghost story.  I loved it.  Monstrous Beauty exceeded my expectations in every way and I was so, so pleased. Hester is my literary dopplegänger. There are plenty of characters out there that I will read, and […]
