Hello everyone! As you may have heard, I’m a big fan of The StoryGraph.  I love their clean design, their statistics and other various tracking resources, and their customer service.  I also really like that they are not owned and operated by Amazon!  But I digress. Here in the book community, we love book tags.  And it occurred to me… we really need a tag for this new site!  There are so many cool features and the fact that it’s literally designed to help people find new reads is screaming for a tag… because a lot of the time, book […]

2020 in Review: Reading Challenges and Blogging Hurdles

It’s that annual wrap up time of year again! When I set up the placeholder for this post a year ago and called it “Reading Challenges and Blogging Hurdles” I had no idea how true that would ring.  I know I was thinking about following through on my personal reading challenge as well as Start On Your Shelfathon… but y’all?  2020 has been rife with reading challenges.  And blogging hurdles.  I am plum worn out. Usually, I use this post to share Goodread’s “My Year In Books”.  This year, I’m going to pull a little data from that page, but they’ve stripped […]

GUYS GUYS GUYS GUESS WHAT. Winter is almost over. Here in Massachusetts, we probably still have a solid month of snow and cold and misery but THEN spring will be here!  And while, yes, I realize that really just adds mud into the mix, I’m still pleased.  I like the visual aesthetics of winter, but it really makes me hate leaving the house.  Particularly in the morning to go to work.  Also driving home in the dark is a major bummer.  I’m over it! Still, there was a lot of good to February, so lets get down to it! The Monthly Haul […]

New Books, New Hobbies, New Look: My January Wrap Up!

January is the month that lasts forever. Here in the northern hemisphere, January is the first full month of really, really cold.  Well, at least it is in Massachusetts.  I’m looking forward to the thaw – I’m tired of shivering and numb fingers.  Grateful to have a home and a place with heat, so I try to focus on life’s small blessings instead of the single digit temperatures. I am not a winter person, I swear. But there’s been a lot of things going on this month, so that can also be exciting! The Monthly Haul Um. So.  I tripped […]

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Red Rising is positively fantastic. This is one of those books with a lot of hype.  And you know, hype isn’t always trustworthy?  I’m so pleased to say that Red Rising is a solidly good book with an imaginative world, striking characters, and a whole lot of grit and spirit. One of the foundations of a good science fiction novel is the science itself.  Pierce Brown did a great job at striking balance with this.  He didn’t over-explain scientific elements (that can be a sci-fi downfall), and he didn’t create anything too unreasonable.  The society in Red Rising felt distantly futuristic, but […]
