The Books In the Places I Remember

The Books In the Places I Remember

In The Hazel Wood, Alice searches through her memories and finds books.  The books  she read when she was living in California, the books from Montana or Ohio… for Alice, her memories are in the places and in books.  I don’t think I’m quite like Alice, but a lot of my memories have books imprinted into them. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak I read The Book Thief aboard the Norwegian Breakaway in 2015.  I had already seen the movie by then – I went to see it by myself at an afternoon matinee on one of my odd Wednesdays off and […]

Meet a Few KICK ASS Ladies in Fantasy

Meet a Few KICK ASS Ladies in Fantasy

Many moons ago, I wrote a post about my Top Three Strong Female Characters.  This list featured Holly Short, Hermione Granger, and Max.  While all three of them are excellent characters, I’ve been really wanting to create an updated list, because a strong, sassy female character is my weakness.  Do you have a heroine that kicks ass?  I need to know all about her.  Like, now. I have a great big list of Strong Female Characters on Goodreads, and I also have a tag on the blog for it.  Needless to repeat, these girls are the peanut butter to my jelly […]

For a lot of the younger bloggers, this may seem CRAZY, but an Excel spreadsheet used to be the PRIME way to keep track of the books you read.  I never used to keep track at all… I just read.  It wasn’t until 2011, when I was a senior in college (#old) and taking my last handful of writing courses that I was challenged to start keeping track of the books I read.  Actually, it wasn’t a challenge.  One of my writing professors was FLABBERGASTED we hadn’t kept track all this time, and it became an urgent assignment. I’m glad […]

Terrier by Tamora Pierce

Terrier by Tamora Pierce

I liked Beka’s story because it was one of Pierce’s, but that was about the extent of my interest. I found some places to be tedious, as though it took Beka a very long time to find one little piece of information, but she discovered the whole plot in a moment. I understand that Pierce is working towards a trilogy, and so the things that bore me now are likely to be important later. This book is written in the first person, and that must be expected before going into it. Traditionally Pierce writes in the third person, so […]
