Everyone Should Read YA Books

Everyone Should Read YA Books

Every YA reader knows the old “why are you reading young adult books, aren’t those for kids?” conversation. Up until the last few years I skirted around recommending books or talking about what I read because I felt as through I read in a genre that most people wouldn’t be interested in. The online book community has helped alleviate some of that awkwardness for me, but more than anything, the books speak for themselves. I have gone from a “oh yeah it’s a YA book” person to a “YOU SHOULD READ THIS, IT’S YA, AND IT’S MAGNIFICENT” person. Why? How? […]

Why I Quit Booktube So Quickly: A Confession of Spontaneous Mistakes

Back in November, I thought I was being really clever and jumped on an idea I’d been toying around with – joining BookTube.  “No problem!” I thought.  “I know how to edit videos on a very basic level and I have plenty of thoughts on books.” I was so naive. If any of you actually went and followed my BookTube channel, you’ll notice that there are only three videos there, and that I haven’t updated in seven months. There are a couple of reasons for this. Creating BookTube videos is incredibly time consuming. From scripting to filming to editing to […]

Some Thoughts On Review Slamming, Especially When It’s Instigated By Authors

A few months ago, one of the authors I follow on Instagram posted a series of stories calling out what her followers suggested – and she agreed – were “ridiculous reviews”.  Some of these were the usual “I didn’t read the book, but 1-star” reviews.  Others were things “I didn’t like this one, but I’m still going to read the sequel” and “I loved this book, 3-stars”.  The whole thread was 20-30 stories long, and months later, I’m still thinking about it, because it didn’t sit well with me. There’s a lot of things about this incident that didn’t sit […]

Blog hopping has always been something of a challenge for me. It’s not because I don’t like the content y’all put out there.  I do!  I really do!  It just falls to the wayside sometimes.  Additionally, once you follow a certain amount of blogs, things start to all blend together and I get discouraged looking for content-based posts under all the memes.  Basically, I struggle with keeping up with the community and I’m curious as to how other bloggers do it.  What makes YOU follow a blog?  What types of posts do you look for? I’ve built The Literary Phoenix […]

The Short & Sweet Life of a Blogger

I’ve been thinking a lot about leaving the book community. I understand on surface level how absurd of a comment this is.  Leave the book community?  I’m barely in it!  I’m rubbish at blog hopping and only tiptoe around Twitter.  I’m only in one Discord server that rarely has activity and even interactions on my “active” fronts – the blog and bookstagram – are middling at best. It’s more… the content creation aspect.  I have a lot of ideas of things to write about, but I’m not sure the interest is out there.  There are some other aspects as well. […]
