Four Books That Meant the World to Me When Times Were Hard

Everyone has their reasons for loving a book. Sometimes, it is mechanics – the characters, the plot, the writing style.  But I also think that people have those books they were reading when they really, really needed an escape.  Whether it’s a personal tragedy, a particular dark spell, or a worldwide pandemic… it’s good to find an escape.  And while I know escapism isn’t always the best reaction to the difficulties of the world… sometimes you need it. And I do want to take this moment to apologize – I said in my Support Indie Bookstores post that I would not […]

10 Book to Movie Adaptations I Actually LOVED

Most of us bookish sorts talk about film adaptations with contempt.  We see the stories we know and love adapted into monstrosities that make our hearts ache and misrepresent everything we love to the non-reading public.  Believe me, I can relate.  I watched this happen with particular favorites, like Ready Player One and The Dark Tower. All that said, I’ve also come across several book-related films that I have particularly enjoyed.  Some of these weren’t even particularly faithful adaptations… but they managed to retain (for me) the spirit of the book and brought to life characters I adored.  In the bookish community, […]

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about Back to School – and it’s a freebie!  Last year I made a list of some of my favorite books from my school years.  This year, I wanted to make a list of books that I thought should taught in schools because of the life-relevant lessons that can be learned from them. In making this list, it occurred to me that most these books probably wouldn’t make it to school reading lists because of the way our country perceives these topics.  I’ve chosen books that discuss everything from  racism to homophobia and […]

Why I Read YA Fiction: An Overview

Why I Read YA Fiction: An Overview

My favorite conversation topic is and has always been literature.  In high school, it was our love for the written word that may have been the only thread in common betwixt my group of friends.  I am now 25, and a few months ago I found myself in conversation with one of these old friends, and the topic of our book-of-the-moment inevitably arose.  When I know a person well enough, I am completely shameless in my literary loves, and in the course of this conversation, my friend said something along the lines of “now that I’m an adult, I try […]
