I Would LOVE LOVE LOVE to Spend More Time in These Books

As a reader, it’s easy to be left wanting MORE.  There are some worlds that are so broad and exciting, it’s easy to dive in and lose ourselves in companion novels and sequels and prequels.  I’m thinking of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall universe, or of Tolkien’s Middle Earth in particular, but you can even go beyond books and talk about Star Wars or Marvel.  These worlds are vast and delicious and have enough content that if you need more of their creator’s imagination, it’s easy to find. Then, there are standalones. I actually have no problem with standalone novels, but every […]

5 Fantastic Female Friendships in YA

5 Fantastic Female Friendships in YA

Hi loves! There was a Top Ten Tuesday topic a couple weeks ago about great friendships in YA, and I really wanted to join in because I’ve been trying to remember to jot down awesome, healthy female friendships when I come across them as I’ve been reading YA books this year.  Unfortunately, since NaNoWriMo was afoot, I really didn’t have time to balance new blog posts and plow ahead with The Novel, so I didn’t make the deadline. That said, I still wanted to join in on this topic!  I know that I’ve missed some, and it pains me to disclose […]

Psychiatric Hospitals Really Aren’t Torture Chambers: A Smol Rant

Psychiatric Hospitals Really Aren’t Torture Chambers: A Smol Rant

Major spinoff from this week’s Book Blogger Hop topic, but it reminded me of this huge pet peeve I have in a few books I’ve read in the last two years. That is to say – what is up with some of these representations of psychiatric hospitals?!  In the modern world, there is still a lot of stigma around poor mental health and asking for help.  While I agree that we have made leaps and bounds in the last couple decades to breathe understanding and tolerance and the truth into the world, that doesn’t make it any easier. So it really doesn’t help when YA novels […]

Beachside Reads for the Non-Beachside Person

Beachside Reads for the Non-Beachside Person

The last time I can remember actually being at the beach was summer 2016.  We were on vacation in Maine with our friends and we all decided to go to Old Orchard Beach.  I went, and spent a great deal of time following their toddler around and NOT going in the water.  Two reasons: The Northern Atlantic Ocean is cold.  Even in June. As it turns out there are THINGS in the ocean.  Things that didn’t bother when I was nine, but now am super aware of.  Like jellyfish.  And giant squids.  Odds of seeing a giant squid?  Low.  Not gonna […]

My Best of the Best, Creme de la Creme Reads of 2017

My Best of the Best, Creme de la Creme Reads of 2017

This is the inevitable post of the year, when we have to go through our amazing list of wonderful reads and pick favorites.  Guys, this is the worst.  It is hard.  There are so many good books that came out this year, but there are also a lot of great books that I read that came out last year.  Or two years ago.  Or ten years ago. Rather than just feature 2017 books, I’ve chosen to drive myself crazy and feature the reads that met and exceeded expectations this year.  The ones that wrapped me up in their worlds and wouldn’t let […]

October Wrap-Up

October Wrap-Up

Well my dears, it’s here! October has packed her bags and gotten away from me again.  Every year I feel like I’m chasing the autumnal delights of this month, and I just can’t keep up with it!  It’s my favorite time of year, but it’s also one of the busiest times of year, and it just slips away.  I come out at the end panting like it’s been a marathon but the loot was well worth it!  The leaves are off the trees, the air is getting crisp… winter is just around the corner. Well this month was actually WORSE than the […]
