Building a Likable Monster: How Villains Keep Stealing Our Hearts

When I first read Shadow and Bone, I was confused.  About a lot of things, but mostly… I had a hard time understanding why so many people loved the Darkling character. For those who haven’t read Shadow and Bone and aren’t familiar with the Grishaverse, I won’t go into too much detail here as I don’t want to spoil things.  The Darkling is a powerful magic-worker in the world and there’s (in my opinion) consistent evidence of his nefarious ways.  And it’s constantly tossed aside by the easily-besotted protagonist.  And even more casually tossed aside by readers.  He never appealed to me […]

The #NowWeRise Book Tag

The #NowWeRise Book Tag was created by Bec’s Books back in 2018, and while I didn’t participate in it back then, I’ve been holding on to it since I saw it drop on Written Word Worlds.  This book tag was create to celebrate Children of Blood and Bone, which was one of the first very impactful YA fantasys featuring rich minority cultures.  Others came before, and other came after, but if you ask readers the first time they truly interacted with a non-White non-Western-European-inspired fantasy world… Children of Blood and Bone will jump first to many, many minds. As it’s a […]

The #NotAll Book Tag

I’m one of those people who absolutely generalizes when she complains about things.  Everything is the worst or I love everything about something.  It’s a bad habit, and one I want to try and overcome because stereotyping is horrible, whether it’s people or days of the week or books or whatever.  Today’s book tag totally brings that vibe. Thanks to the Orangutan Librarian for creating this #notall book tag!  It’s a fun idea, and I absolutely stole this from Holly @ Nut Free Nerd a little over a year ago.  Thanks, Holly for bringing this tag to my attention! #NotAll Cover Changes || […]

Well! September breezed through again – largely, I think, because I was on vacation this month! Regular readers and those who follow along on my Twitter or Instagram will know that my husband and I went down to Orlando to the Disney Parks last week! It was hot and exhausting but SO much fun. I’ll talk a little more about that later and in coming weeks. All the things I’ve been reading Highlights: Vicious / ★★★★ 1/2 – This is my second V.E. Schwab book. Color me impressed! This was light on the world building, but amazing in character development. […]

Vicious by V. E. Schwab

I’ve only read one other V. E. Schwab book (A Darker Shade of Magic) and loved it.  Schwab has a way of wrapping her reader up slowly in her stories, until you’re so tangled you have no choice but to dig deeper for the dark secret at the center of the novel.  It’s a beautiful thing, really.  Thank goodness her books aren’t as long as George R. R. Martin’s, or we’d all be ensnared for life. Victor Vale is a great character.  He is beyond confident – Vale is resolute.  There were a few passages that set off red […]
