Sometime in the midst of May, summer arrived! When I left to go to Europe, there was a snowstorm on our tail, following us from New Hampshire all the way up to Manhattan. When I came back, it was 80-degrees outside!  That, in a brief description, is New England weather.  I love it and I hate it, but overall I’m really glad to see the sunshine. Mentally and emotionally, May is a difficult month for me.  I’ll talk about that a little more later, but lets start, as always, with the books! I will unabashedly admit I get attached to characters because I like their names.  I read a lot of fantasy and the names get to be quite original and fun.  For example, last week I finished Etiquette & Espionage.  The main character had the delightful moniker “Sophronia” and her dog’s name was Bumbersnoot.  For the record, when asked why he should be called Bumbersnoot, her response was a very adept, “Why not?”.  Yes.  Love it.   Everybody seems to really enjoy this book, but it sort of made me angry. I have such limited tolerance for Spoiled Rich Brat Is Sad stories.  Lockhart tries to humanize Cady sometimes – she has chronic migraines and is sad and gives her stuff away.  But she’s so fake and selfish; other characters call her out on her selfishness sometimes, which is a bit satisfying, but it’s not enough for me to like her.  The tragedy in her life is genuinely horrible, but she is so disconnected from it… I couldn’t be bothered to care, either.
