A Little Awareness, A Little Appreciation, & A Lotta Book Stuff: January 2021 Wrap Up!

A Little Awareness, A Little Appreciation, & A Lotta Book Stuff: January 2021 Wrap Up!

Welcome to the first wrap up of 2021, where we get to look at everything that got rolling as the new year started and we can celebrate how strikingly different everything is now that it’s not 2020 anymore! I kid, of course, because we still have all the same things to work on as we did in 2020, all the same concerns and challenges and opportunities for growth.  But the psychology of hope is nice, right?  For myself, 2021 hasn’t been too bad on a personal level, and for that I’m truly grateful.  Still, there’s the continued opportunity to do […]

Plotting a Book Is Like Pulling Teeth – A Pantser’s Confession About Drafting

Plotting a Book Is Like Pulling Teeth – A Pantser’s Confession About Drafting

True facts:  I am not a plotter. The greatest joy in writing, for me, is sitting down with a blank sheet and filling it.  I’m the type of person who comes up with scenes and moments in her head while in the shower or while commuting when I can’t write anything down, and replays them over and over and over until I can get to a pen and paper.  My writing is an adventure in my mind, completely unstructured. And over the years I have learned that is fine for NaNoWriMo, and a mess if I actually want to get anything done. […]

Hello everyone and happy Monday! I’m going to be making a few changes to my wrap ups, starting with this month.  First of all, I’m removing the “haul” section.  There’s a couple reasons for this. I always feel weird talking about new books and ARCs when there are so many out there who can’t bring in books every month because of their location or financial situation. I started a BookTube. In many ways, #2 feels like it cancels out #1.  I don’t get dozens of books every month, either… but Book Hauls seems like a central theme on BookTube and it […]

Finding My “New Normal” – The May 2020 Wrap Up

Finding My “New Normal” – The May 2020 Wrap Up

Good morning everyone and happy… June 8th! I thought about dropping this wrap up last Monday, but I wanted to give myself a little extra time to get my thoughts together as I usually write these posts the weekend before dropping them and who knows!  I may have finished an amazing book on May 31st! I’ve been personally doing a *little* better these days, and I think that comes with a better level of certainty and of course, more sunshine.  Like, literal sunshine.  I don’t do well in the spring.  While the world is still struggling, at least the outline […]

“Why Haven’t You Finished Your Novel?” & Other Exasperating Productivity Suggestions During Shelter-In-Place

“Why Haven’t You Finished Your Novel?” & Other Exasperating Productivity Suggestions During Shelter-In-Place

In the early days of shelter-in-place mandates, a message sputtered up through the waves of social media: “Now that we’re all at home, we can Do That Thing!” For some people, “that thing” was learning a new instrument.  Really digging into learning Portuguese.  For many, it was perfecting sourdough bread (which I tease about, but I love sourdough bread… please keep baking!).  In writerly circles, the pressure seemed to be on writing:  you don’t have social engagements, so now you can finish that book. Doesn’t matter if the person was an aspiring novelist or a seasoned author – the vision […]
